Thus it was spoken. Here, to dispel the ignorance that "the body is the object of my reliance," the mindfulness of the body is taught, meaning that this body is an impure and painful place, not the object of my reliance. To dispel the ignorance that "feelings are what I constantly enjoy," the mindfulness of feelings is taught, meaning that all feelings are painful, not what I constantly enjoy. To dispel the clinging to mind, intellect, and consciousness as mine, the practice of mindfulness of mind is taught, meaning that the mind is of the nature of momentary arising and ceasing, not of the nature of self. To dispel the ignorance that "the Dharma defiles and purifies me," the practice of mindfulness of Dharma is taught, meaning that desire and so on defile, and faith and so on purify the mind, but only this, because it is of the nature of no-self, so there is no possibility of defilement and purification in it. After teaching the mindfulnesses, the four right exertions are taught. Wishing to explain as taught, it was thus spoken: "Monks, what are the four right exertions?" and so on. The four right exertions are: not to produce unarisen evil, to abandon arisen evil, to produce unarisen good, and to maintain arisen good. Objection: Not producing unarisen evil and abandoning arisen evil, these two are dharmas to be abandoned, so it is appropriate to call them right exertions. Producing unarisen good and maintaining arisen good, these two are dharmas to be accomplished, so how are they called right exertions? Answer: Although it seems inappropriate to establish them in both, to produce good and to maintain good, it is necessary to abandon the unfavorable aspects, and to cause good to arise and abide, so abandoning the unfavorable aspects can also be called right exertion, there is no fault. Teaching the first right exertion.

Therefore. Among them, monks, monks, it is said to prevent the arising of unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas, etc. Among them, sinful and unwholesome dharmas refer to the unwholesome actions of body, speech, and mind in the desire realm, such as killing, stealing, and unchastity in terms of body; lying, harsh speech, divisive speech, and idle chatter in terms of speech; and greed, malice, and wrong views in terms of mind; as well as the ten unwholesome actions, and the causes that produce them, such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance, which are sinful and unwholesome dharmas. Because they are condemned by the noble ones, they are sinful. Because they will be experienced as unpleasant when they ripen, they are unwholesome. Or, causing harm to oneself and others is sinful. Because it is contrary to virtuous dharma, it is unwholesome. Those unwholesome dharmas that have not manifested, nor have they been encountered and practiced, are called unarisen, that is, existing in latent tendencies. Or, the trainings of higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom are lost, and the dharma that causes the loss of the three trainings is called sinful and unwholesome dharma. Among them, the loss of the training of higher morality refers to the loss of the six-membered morality. There are also ten causes for the loss of morality: not taking it well from the beginning, being lax, holding wrong views, being negligent, being completely controlled by laziness, having wrong aspirations, behavior becoming degenerate, livelihood becoming degenerate, falling into extremes, not making effort, and vows being lost. Among them, how is it that one does not take it well from the beginning? For example, taking it out of fear of the king, or fear of thieves, or lack of livelihood, etc., and in this way, it will be lost later. How does one become lax? For example, some people, after taking vows, do not strictly observe the objects of training because they have no shame, no embarrassment, and little regret, but act as they degenerate, treating the vows with laxity.
