Those twenty minds that arise from focusing on something other than oneself, focusing on the form of other beings, focusing on the number belonging to other beings, are called external minds. If the mind focuses on the form of other beings, on the number belonging to other beings, the twenty minds that arise from this are called internal and external minds. The mind can also be momentarily filled with desire, and momentarily free from desire, and so on. Recognizing that the mind cannot remain even for a moment, and that its nature is constantly changing, is called observing the mind. As for other meanings such as clarity, they have already been explained above. Regarding "internal dharmas" and so on, if dharmas are divided into two types, black and white, then twenty types can be identified. What are these twenty? Desire and subduing desire, hatred and subduing hatred, delusion and subduing delusion, concentration, distraction, drowsiness, elation, excitement, non-excitement, peace, non-peace, perfect equanimity, non-perfect equanimity, path perfectly cultivated, path not perfectly cultivated, liberation through perfect cultivation, non-liberation through perfect cultivation. Desire, hatred, delusion, distraction, drowsiness, excitement, non-peace, non-equanimity, path not well cultivated, non-liberation through well cultivation, these ten are black dharmas. Subduing desire, subduing hatred, subduing delusion, concentration, elation, non-excitement, peace, equanimity, path well cultivated, liberation through well cultivation, these ten are white dharmas. Among these, attachment to form and desirable qualities is desire. Meditating on impurity is subduing desire. Being angry at enemies and so on is hatred. Loving-kindness is subduing hatred. Not understanding karma and its results is delusion. Wisdom that understands the self and general characteristics of dharmas is subduing delusion. The mind abiding single-pointedly within is concentration. The mind indulging in desirable qualities is distraction. The mind being overwhelmed by sleep and drowsiness is dro

Mapao. The fruit of meditation, or eliminating sleep and drowsiness by contemplating the qualities of the Thus-Gone One, is elevation. When the mind, having been elevated, subsequently becomes distracted, it is agitation. Abandoning both sinking and agitation, and the mind becoming equanimous, is non-agitation. Being free from obscurations such as sleep and drowsiness is tranquility. Not being free from obscurations is non-tranquility. The first, second, third, and fourth dhyanas; entering into the root meditation is extreme samadhi. Not entering into the root meditation is not samadhi. In this regard, obtaining the cultivation of the noble path is extreme cultivation of the path. Not obtaining the cultivation of the noble path is not extreme cultivation of the path. Abandoning all the afflictions of the three realms and not being reborn thereafter is liberation through extreme cultivation. Not abandoning all afflictions is not liberation through extreme cultivation. These dharmas are also classified into three types: internal dharmas, external dharmas, and internal and external dharmas. In this context, the arising of black or white dharmas from one's own body, which belongs to the category of sentient beings, is an internal dharma. The arising of white or black dharmas from focusing on forms and other things that do not belong to the category of sentient beings is an external dharma. The arising of white or black dharmas from focusing on the bodies of other sentient beings, which belong to the category of sentient beings, is called internal and external dharmas. Black dharmas lead to complete affliction, and white dharmas lead to complete purification, and that is all. Here, the view that there is no self that causes complete affliction or a self that causes complete purification is called observing dharmas in accordance with dharmas, and the meaning of clarity and so on is as explained above. Furthermore, the four mindfulnesses are also classified into five types: the five types are object, nature, companion, cultivation, and the fruit of cultivation. Just as the four mindfulnesses are classified into five types, so too are the remaining limbs of enlightenment classified into five types. What are the objects of mindfulness? They are also four: body, mind, feeling, and dharma.
