turns into pus. From the pus, it turns into impure things like semen. Thus, this body is made of impure substances from beginning to end. Therefore, contemplate and think that this body is impure, thus he taught the monks. Furthermore, in order to fully reveal the assembly of impure things, it is said that this body is made of nine hundred and six bones, etc. Just as a house relies on pillars for support, so too does this body rely on nine hundred and six bones for support. Like a house made of inferior wood, the meaning is that, for example, a house made of inferior wood has many gaps where the joints are not tightly connected, and this body also has many gaps because many bones are connected. The meaning of having many veins is that, just as a house has many beams, this body also has four hundred veins connected separately like beams. The meaning of being completely covered by five hundred pieces of flesh is that, just as a house is covered with mud, it is covered by layers of lumps of five hundred pieces of flesh. The meaning of being wrapped by six main veins is that, just as the beams of a house rely on the ridgepole, other smaller veins rely on the six main veins. The meaning of being connected by seven hundred small veins is the same as what was said above, that seven hundred small veins are connected like beams. The meaning of being connected by nine hundred water veins is that nine hundred water veins act as a fastener to prevent joints and bones from separating. The meaning of veins being like windows is that, like the windows of a house, the gaps in the veins exist in the body like windows. The meaning of existing like a broken container is that, just as a broken container has empty holes, this body is always characterized by being vulnerable to harm in seven hundred vital points. The meaning of countless hairs, etc., is that, just as the outside of an inferior house is covered with grass, this body is also covered from the outside by one million eight hundred and forty thousand hairs. The meaning of the orifices of the five senses being filled with dirt and impurity is that impure things flow from the five senses of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body, and the joints of the body

Because even a drop of water on the ground is filled with impurities. It is said, "Filled with a handful of brains," and so on. Like troughs, each filled separately with equal amounts, just as troughs are each filled with grain. The vessels that are not discarded are also each filled with impurities. The six tastes nourish, namely sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, salty, and astringent, which constantly nourish and strengthen the body. The body's fire burns impurities, and so on. Just as the fire of a burnt offering burns the offerings. The fire element present in the great elements also constantly burns impurities like a burnt offering. Because of becoming thin, weak, old, and bent, it always faces decay. If each part of the body is examined separately, everything is unbearable to examine, so all parts of the body appear unpleasant. Odors constantly arise from the mouth, nose, and impure orifices, and because impurities also reside inside the body, the odor is unpleasant, being the nature of decay. Therefore, there is no place for pride or self-admiration in this ugly body. So, do not generate arrogance, that is the meaning. The meaning of what was said above is summarized into verses and taught. As it is said, "Thus, contemplate the body as an impure aggregate," and so on. "Thus" means as said above. As said above, this body is filled with various kinds of impurities, therefore, because it is an impure aggregate, it is not appropriate to be satisfied with it or to consider it beautiful, that is the meaning. Those who are proud and conceited of their bodies, and so on, mean that even though they know the body is impure, they generate pride in this impure body, thinking it is "good," and the foolish people who are attached to this body and do not abandon it are like a fool who carries an impure vessel with them and considers it good and is attached to it. The meaning of "pus-like substance flows from the nose" is that this body constantly drips snot and pus-like substance from the nose, and constantly emits an unpleasant odor from the mouth like the stench of a decaying corpse, and also flows eye mucus, pus, and worm-like substances from the eyes.

Because a son is born, how can there be attachment and pride towards him? This is what is called humanity. The wise ones believe that the above-mentioned impure aspects are not just for examination, but one should also use one's own wisdom to examine what else is impure, so they gave such instructions. Examine these and so on. Saying these and so on, the sound of "and so on" is to instruct that one should also use one's own wisdom to examine others. This is said to show that example. Just like this, monks, opening the two doors of the granary, etc. The two doors of the granary are opening the door with grain and opening the door with treasures, which are opening the two doors separately. Or, opening the two doors is just a symbol, and it should be seen as opening many doors of the granary separately. Just as a person with eyes enters a granary with many doors opened separately, and knows that this granary is filled with husked grains, and this granary is filled with rice, so should a wise and intelligent person also observe this body, that this body is now filled with all kinds of impure things, and that it was also produced from impure causes in the past. In order to show the first samadhi and conclude, it is said here, monks, etc. The rebuttal says, like this, other sutras say that the vajra-like samadhi, which is held by the four dhyanas, can cut off all defilements, but here it says that by practicing impurity and loathing the body, one can cut off the attachment of desire. How can this not contradict other statements? The answer is that other sutras say that cutting off all defilements also starts from loathing the body, and the vajra-like samadhi held by the four dhyanas is said with the intention of cutting off the defilements that are to be cut off. Here it is said that for those who have strong attachments, in order to cut off attachments, practicing impurity and loathing the body can become the antidote to cutting off the attachment of desire, because it is said for the sake of sentient beings cutting off the beautiful attachment to themselves and others, so there is no contradiction. In order to show the second samadhi, it is said, monks, practice samadhi and rely on, etc.
