Ma-pa is the third of the dhyana practices. It is also said that wisdom can be attained. To attain the distinction of wisdom is to attain wisdom to the utmost, either the wisdom of knowing the peace of the noble truths, or to attain the wisdom of knowing the characteristics of the self and the commonality of all dharmas. To attain it, the practice is the fourth of the dhyana practices. Taking the first dhyana practice as an example, it says "O monks," and so on. If asked how to practice abandoning desire and attachment, therefore it says "For this body, from the soles of the feet upwards to the hair," and so on. For this body, that is, for one's own or another's body, one should combine wisdom to know it as it is. How to know it? Starting from the soles of the feet, upwards to the hair and the top of the head, or starting from the hair and the top of the head, downwards to the soles of the feet. "Up to the skin" means starting from the outer hair and skin, to the inner flesh, blood, and bones. "How it abides" means to know that this body, even now, abides in the nature of being filled with various impure aspects. "How it aspires" means to know how this body was abandoned by good and bad karma in the past, and how it arose from the impure substances of the parents after entering the womb. To clearly show that meaning, it says "Filled with various impure substances," and so on, that is, to know that even when looking at this body, it abides from the head to the soles of the feet filled with various impure substances such as blood and pus, and that it also arose from the blood and semen of the parents in the past. "With true wisdom" means with the wisdom that is in accordance with the unpolluted knowledge, and the one who knows in this way is himself polluted. "To know thoroughly as it is" means that for what is impure, one should know it as the only synonym for knowing it completely without inversion or error. In order to extensively explain the brief display of practicing the impurity and destruction of the body, therefore it says "Thus this body is," and so on. Ultimately, it gradually arises.

English

The so-called "this" refers to this body initially being weak and powerless. Then it becomes slightly firmer. Then it becomes strong, thus giving rise to youth, adulthood, and old age, etc. The so-called "gradually disintegrating" refers to the gradual disintegration of weakness and powerlessness, etc., that is, after weakness and powerlessness disintegrate, slight firmness also disintegrates. After slight firmness disintegrates, adulthood disintegrates, until old age disintegrates. The so-called "accumulating extremely fine dust" refers to being formed from the accumulation of fine particles of earth, water, fire, and wind. The so-called "unstable" refers to needing food to be nourished, and being like an illusion, merely an appearance. The so-called "having highs and lows" refers to exhaling, which results in obtaining the body, and inhaling, which causes the body to shrink and become low. Alternatively, because it needs food to be nourished, it has highs and lows, that is, if it has food, it becomes full and tall, and if it lacks food, it becomes weak and short. The so-called "nine wounds' doors and pores dripping" refers to the nine wounds' doors, which are the eyes, ears, and two nostrils, totaling six, plus the mouth, anus, and urethra, totaling nine. From these places, mucus, saliva, and nasal mucus, etc., constantly drip, and from each pore, dust constantly drips. Knowing that it is like an anthill, a dwelling place for venomous snakes, just as an anthill is a dwelling place for excrement, and venomous snakes live inside, in this dwelling place of the five aggregates' excrement, venomous snakes of afflictions also reside. The so-called "like a venomous snake, ungrateful" refers to, just as a venomous snake is fed and raised from a young age, and if it is slightly harmed, or even if it is not harmed, it will turn around and kill you, this body is also like that. If you wash it and massage it well, etc., and if you don't wash it and massage it for a while, etc., it will turn around and harm you, so it is said to be ungrateful. The so-called "like King Ajatasatru and a monkey, betraying kindness" refers to, for example, King Ajatasatru killed his father, who was the supreme object of gratitude, just as a monkey serves and attends to you, but instead becomes fat and harms you. This body is also like that. Your parents raised you, but you have no affection for your parents. You attend to it well, but instead it causes afflictions to increase and turns around to harm you, so it is said to be betraying kindness. It is like a bad friend.
