It is ignorant of the five uncontaminated faculties such as faith. The meaning is that these five faculties are weak, powerless, and feeble. The so-called supramundane faculties are synonymous with the uncontaminated faculties. If one is weak in power to attain something, therefore it is said, "For the sake of exhausting defilements." Because one is to attain the exhaustion of defilements, it is said that they are weak in power. In order to show the meaning of weak power, it is said, "Weak and unable to attain quickly." It means that even at the time of initially entering, one cannot enter quickly, so it is weak. Even at the time of cultivation, one cannot attain the fruit, so it is unable to attain quickly. In order to show what the five supramundane faculties are, it is said, "Like the faculty of faith," and so on. The characteristics of the five faculties have been explained in detail in the context of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. The so-called weakness towards the supramundane faculties refers to beings with a preponderance of the three afflictions. Because the five supramundane faculties are weak, in order to exhaust the afflictions and contaminated dharmas, one immediately enters into samadhi on the path of abandoning afflictions. Not being able to quickly enter into samadhi is called the direct perception of ignorance of the path of suffering. In reality, because the three afflictions are heavy, the five supramundane faculties are weak and the faculties are dull. These faculties cannot attain irreversibility, as well as the intermediate states of dhyana, as well as the samapatti of the formless realms, and at the time of entering into samadhi, it is the direct perception of ignorance of the path of suffering. Why is this? Because in irreversibility, as well as in the intermediate states of dhyana, there is no gathering of limbs, and because shamatha and vipassana are weak, one must strive to cultivate. Moreover, in the formless realm, there is also no gathering of limbs, and because vipassana is weak, one must strive to cultivate, so it is painful. Because beings have dull faculties, they cannot quickly attain the fruit, so it is ignorance. In reality, the direct perception of its path is small in ignorance, so it is the path of ignorance, which means small wisdom.

Since desire and hatred are mutually incompatible dharmas, they cannot arise simultaneously. Therefore, one should understand the arising of these two through the distinction of the continuum: sometimes desire arises, sometimes hatred arises, and sometimes ignorance arises. In order to explain the two paths, it is said, "What is the path of suffering that is quickly realized?" and so on. The other meanings are the same as previously explained. What is meant by "quickly realized"? It refers to that which quickly knows the immediately preceding samadhi, which is to quickly realize, meaning sharp wisdom. In order to explain the meaning of sharp wisdom, it is said, "It is stronger, sharper, and quickly attained." Because it is sharp, it is stronger. Because it is quickly attained, it is sharp. The latter explanation should be viewed in light of the former. Alternatively, there are three types of paths: the path of ascertainment, the path of seeing, and the path of cultivation. On the path of ascertainment, the five faculties quickly enter, so it is "strong." On the path of seeing, it quickly enters, so it is "sharp." On the path of cultivation, it quickly enters, so it is "quickly attained." In short, a person with very strong three afflictions cannot be attained by someone with dull faculties. If one abides in the intervals of dhyana and formless attainments, it is called "quickly realizing the path of suffering," because these do not include the limbs, and because shamatha and vipashyana are weak, one must strive to practice, hence it is the "path of suffering." A person with sharp wisdom quickly attains the immediately preceding samadhi, so it is "quickly realized." In order to explain the third path, it is said, "What is the path of bliss that is ignorantly realized?" and so on. Reducing desire and so on should also be understood as the opposite of increasing desire and so on. In short, a person with very weak three afflictions, whose five supramundane faculties are dull and weak, cultivates the first, second, third, and fourth dhyanas of the form realm, which is called "the path of bliss that is ignorantly realized." Why is that? Because the dhyanas of the form realm...
