It is called the Great Elements. So, how does it become the Great Elements? As it is said in the sutra: "Joyful one, this great earth abides on water, and water abides on wind." It is also said: "When the fire element intensifies, it will burn everything down to the Brahma world. When the water element intensifies, it will destroy everything down to the Abhasvara heaven. When the wind element intensifies, it will destroy everything down to the Brhatphala heaven." It is also said: "When the earth element intensifies, it will block all the water holes. When the water holes are blocked, wind will not arise. When wind does not arise, its moisture will dry up. When the moisture dries up, fire will arise in the sky, burning everything." Therefore, these are called the Great Elements. Someone asked: Where there are the four great elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, are there also other great elements? Some teachers say: Yes. How so? Because these four always exist inseparable. If the earth element does not have the water element, then the earth element will disintegrate separately, like scattered ashes. If the water element does not have the earth element, then even if you boil sugarcane juice, it will not harden. If the fire element does not have the earth and water elements, then the flames will separate from each other, and the flames will not be able to lift leaves and so on. If the wind element does not have the earth element and the fire element, and so on, then the wind will not be able to carry grass and leaves, and there will be no such thing as hot wind and cold wind. Furthermore, water arises from earth, just as water manifests from a water crystal. Similarly, fire arises from earth, just as fire manifests from a fire crystal. Wind arises from earth, just as wind arises from striking dust or shaking palm leaves. Water contains the ability to lift leaves and so on; fire contains the ability to burn leaves and grass and so on; wind contains the ability to shake and blow downwards. Fire contains the ability for flames to support each other, and to support leaves and so on; water contains the ability for flames not to disperse; wind contains the ability to shake and move. Wind contains the ability to lift leaves and so on; fire contains the ability to dry wet cloths and so on; water contains the ability not to separate from each other, but to shake and arise together. The coarse form aggregate has eleven aspects: the five sense faculties, the five sense objects, and non-manifest form. The five sense faculties are: the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, and the body faculty. The five sense objects are: form, sound, smell, taste, and tactile object. What is the eye faculty? It is the colored object that serves as the basis for eye consciousness. What is the ear faculty? It is the colored object that serves as the basis for ear consciousness. What is the nose faculty? It is the colored object that serves as the basis for nose consciousness. What is the tongue faculty? It is the colored object that serves as the basis for tongue consciousness. What is the body faculty? It is the colored object that serves as the basis for body consciousness. What is form? There are two types: the nature of color and the nature of shape. The nature of color is blue, yellow, red, and white. The nature of shape is long, short, round, perfectly round, thin, thick, equal, and unequal. What is sound? There are three types: that which arises from the cause of the great elements with grasping, that which arises from the cause of the great elements without grasping, and that which arises from the cause of both. That which arises from the cause of the great elements with grasping is the sound of sentient beings. That which arises from the cause of the great elements without grasping is the sound of forests and rivers. That which arises from the cause of both is the sound of earthenware drums and lutes, and so on. There are three types of smell: pleasant smell, unpleasant smell, and neutral smell. Pleasant smell is the smell of sandalwood, and so on. Unpleasant smell is the smell of impure things, and so on. Neutral smell is the smell of conch shells and fish paste, and so on. What is taste?
