Jealousy is when one sees others possessing qualities such as faith, learning, and moral discipline, and due to attachment to these qualities, one generates hatred and an unbearable feeling in the mind, which is called jealousy. Stinginess is the opposite of generosity, which is clinging in the mind. This is because of strong attachment, clinging to the necessities of life, and being unwilling to give them away. One is unable to perform offerings and generosity to the Three Jewels and the poor, which is called being contrary to generosity. Gathering unnecessary possessions and all kinds of evil deeds is called clinging in the mind. Deceit is deceiving others, showing something that is not true. In order to gain profit, respect, and offerings, one pretends to have qualities even when one does not, engaging in pretense and deception. Flattery is taking measures to conceal one's own faults, with a cunning mind. In order to gain offerings and respect, fearing that one's pretense and other faults will be recognized by others, one spreads rumors, and both words and meanings are ambiguous. This is the cunning method of concealing faults. Pride is being attached to one's own perfections, being very happy, which is clinging in the mind. Perfections refer to lineage, knowledge, wealth, practice, skills, and appearance, etc. Being very happy with these perfections is feeling comfortable and joyful because of these perfections. Clinging is when the mind is satisfied with one's own wealth, etc., thinking that these are enough, and not engaging in other virtuous deeds, which is also called pride. Harm is inflicting various kinds of harm on sentient beings. Due to the lack of compassion and love, one beats with whips and fists, binds and coerces, and engages in various cruel acts, which is called harm. Shamelessness is not considering sins as unbecoming to oneself. Due to strong attachment, hatred, and ignorance, being controlled by them is shamelessness. Sins are unwholesome actions. Unbecoming means that one is a noble son or a renunciate monk,

Therefore, such a person engages in sinful actions without thinking, "This is not my place." Shamelessness means not being considerate of others due to faults. What is meant by not being considerate of others is that when doing sinful and unwholesome deeds, one does not consider others' punishments, accusations, etc., and does not worry about shame. Drowsiness means that the mind is not fit for work, that is, laziness. This means that due to the heavy component of ignorance, the mind is not fit for work when listening and thinking, because there is no mind that clearly manifests the distinction of wisdom. Agitation means that the mind is not peaceful. This means that due to the heavy component of desire, one always first engages in playing and laughing, etc., following the attractive appearances and being distracted, which will hinder the practice of calm abiding during meditation. Disbelief means not believing in karma, results, truths, and the Three Jewels, and the mind is not pleased, which is the opposite of faith. Karma refers to good karma, bad karma, and neutral karma. Results refer to happiness, suffering, and neither. Truths refer to the four truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path. The Three Jewels refer to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Not believing in their existence and not being pleased with their qualities means that without faith, one cannot engage in the aspect of virtue. Laziness means that the mind is not happy to engage in virtue, which is the opposite of diligence. This means that one does not engage in aspects of virtue such as listening, thinking, and meditating, but instead indulges in sleep and lazy enjoyment, and because of the heavy component of ignorance, one does not strive for virtue, so it is called the opposite of diligence and unhappiness. Negligence means that one does not protect one's mind from afflictions such as desire, hatred, and laziness, and does not cultivate virtue. This means that negligence is caused by the three: desire, hatred, and ignorance, and one abides in laziness and is controlled by these four. Negligence means that one follows these four: desire and hatred, and lets the mind wander without restraining it, which is not protecting the mind.
