Because of not having things but thinking of owning them, the mind becomes arrogant and proud. Manifest arrogance is: Regarding the attainment of the noble state and the excellence of meditative concentration, even though one has not attained them, after a slight thought arises in the mind that one is capable, one thinks that one has attained the state of a noble being. The arrogance of thinking slightly is: Compared to oneself, others appear great because they are lowly, but one does not think so, but rather thinks that there is only a slight difference between oneself and others. Wrong view arrogance is that one has various faults, even without a single merit, but one thinks that one possesses all the merits such as discipline, and one's heart is proud and arrogant. Ignorance is not knowing karma and its results, the truths, and the Three Jewels, which are divided into co-emergent and imputed. Karma is virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. The result is happiness, suffering, and neither. The truths are the four: the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. The Three Jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, these three. Not knowing that these have no qualities or not knowing that they have qualities is ignorance. Not knowing that these exist by nature or have qualities is co-emergent ignorance. Not knowing these through others' wrong and erroneous teachings is called imputed ignorance. Among the five views, the view of the aggregates of destruction is: These five aggregates are destroyed at every moment, and are a collection of many accumulated substances. In reality, there is no self or what belongs to self, but one clings to the belief that there is a self and what belongs to self. The view of clinging to extremes is to view as either permanent or impermanent, that is, to believe that it is like a snake shedding its skin, or that it is completely annihilated like a fire extinguished when the wood is exhausted. Wrong view is slander, saying that karma, results, truths, the Three Jewels, and this world and the next, etc., do not exist at all. View of holding views as supreme is to regard the three types of views mentioned above and the basis of those views, the aggregates of the body, as the only good, clinging to them as superior and primary, thinking that there is nothing better than this.

It is the mind. Taking morality and asceticism as supreme means holding the precepts of abandoning the seven faults arising from body and speech, and the asceticism of dogs and cows, or plucking hair and shaving, etc., thinking that doing these will lead to liberation and attainment of liberation. Doubt means having doubts about the truth, etc., that is, doubting whether karma and its results, the truth, and the Three Jewels exist or not. If they exist, whether they have merits or not, the mind becomes twofold, unable to gain certainty, and therefore does not enter the side of virtue. What are the twenty near afflictions? They are anger, resentment, concealment, vexation, jealousy, miserliness, deceit, flattery, arrogance, harm, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, torpor, excitement, lack of faith, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, distraction, and non-knowing. These twenty are mentioned, and will be explained in order below. Among them, anger means dwelling on the desire to harm immediately, with the mind filled with suffering. One should not be angry with enemies and other objects of anger that are past and future hidden things, but for those that are manifest now, thinking that they are intolerable and wanting to harm them, this is called anger and suffering. Resentment means holding a grudge, that is, thinking that one will never let go of enemies and others who harm oneself and one's relatives and other retinue, and that one will retaliate someday. Concealment means hiding one's own faults, that is, doing sinful and non-virtuous deeds that should not be done, which is called fault. The virtuous friend will say that doing these actions that should not be done will bring these faults and punishments, therefore one cannot admit that one has no fault. Vexation means scolding with harsh words, that is, revealing the faults and secrets of others, and speaking harsh words, which is called harsh language, because it hurts others, it is called scolding. Jealousy means that the mind is disturbed from within by the perfections of others, that is, the wealth and respect that others have gained.
