Certainty, called 'holding,' definitely refers to the object of liking, not to other objects that are not liked. This is examined through direct perception and inference. Having unwavering faith and no doubt in the teachings of the Sutras and Treatises is called 'certainty.' Alternatively, holding the self and general characteristics of all phenomena as not permanent and blissful, but as impermanent, etc., is called 'certainty.' Memory is not forgetting the familiar object itself, but the mind's manifestation of remembrance. Meeting beforehand, experiencing, and associating frequently is called 'familiarity.' Not forgetting such a familiar object. For example, clearly remembering the content of speech is called the mind's manifestation of remembrance. Samadhi is the mind being one-pointed on the object of investigation. The object of investigation is the meaning of unborn and unarisen, or one of the Four Noble Truths, and should be understood as each of the four. One-pointedness of mind is like twisting the end of a thread and inserting it into the eye of a needle. Similarly, during meditation, the mind does not wander to other objects but focuses on the object of meditation, which is called one-pointed samadhi. Wisdom is the thorough differentiation of these, generated by reason and non-reason, and others. Wisdom is of three types: the wisdom of listening, the wisdom of thinking, and the wisdom of meditation. Entering the Buddha's teachings is generated by reason. Entering the teachings of the non-Buddhists is called generated by non-reason. Even if neither of the two teaches, it is easy to know by nature, which is called 'other.' 'Thoroughly differentiating these' refers to the object of samadhi mentioned above. With the wisdom of reason, one can ascertain the self and general characteristics of all phenomena, that is, in the ultimate truth, there is no arising or ceasing, and in the conventional truth, the nature of earth being solid and water being moist, etc., without error. With the wisdom of non-reason, one will consider and meditate on the selflessness as having a self, like seeing horns growing on the head. Other wisdom is being naturally intelligent without being taught by anyone, and being skilled in all activities such as work and speech.

So, what is the one virtue? Faith is said to be the manifest belief and joy in karma, result, truth, and the Three Jewels. Karma is virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Result is what is produced by that karma, which is neither happiness nor suffering. Truth is the four noble truths: suffering, origin, cessation, and path. It is to believe in the existence of these. The Three Jewels are the Buddha, who is perfect in knowledge and abandonment; the Dharma, which is the path that liberates from all suffering; and the Sangha, who are engaged in abandoning afflictions and are fields of merit. Recognizing these qualities and being delighted in mind is called faith. Shame is said to be avoiding what is blameworthy by considering oneself or the Dharma. Oneself refers to holding the conduct of a noble lineage, such as a renunciate or a Brahmin, thinking that it is not appropriate to do evil deeds, that these are not things I should do, and not doing them, which is considering oneself. Considering the Dharma means thinking that if one does evil deeds, sins, non-virtuous actions, the result will be falling into the three lower realms and experiencing various sufferings, and not doing them. What is blameworthy is what is unspeakable and unbearable to mention, not even suitable to speak of and a cause for reproach. Fearing such things is called avoidance. Humility is said to be avoiding what is blameworthy by considering the world. If I do evil deeds such as killing, others will scold and punish me, and my reputation will be ruined, which is not good. Fearing these things and not doing them is called avoidance. Non-attachment is the antidote to attachment, which is renouncing and not taking. The objects to be non-attached to are the body and possessions. Their antidotes are, respectively, the contemplation of impurity, loving-kindness, and dependent origination, applying them one by one in order. Renouncing and not taking means that in the end of using and dwelling in the body and possessions, various sufferings such as birth, aging, sickness, and death arise and increase.
