The four abandonments show abiding in higher discipline. 'The mind becomes happy and dwells in equanimity' means the mind becomes workable and happy. From that cause, single-pointed concentration will arise in the continuum of the meditator. This shows the training of higher mind. If the mind dwells in equanimity, one will know reality as it is, and see reality as it is. For example, if rivers and so on are not disturbed or moved, reflections of faces and so on will appear clearly. Similarly, if the mind dwells in equanimity and is not moved by the wind of conceptual thought, then uniting insight and quiescence, one knows the characteristics of the Dharma such as the four truths with insight, and sees without inversion with quiescence. This is knowing reality as it is, and seeing reality as it is. If one sees reality as it is, one will become weary. This means that through seeing and knowing the characteristics of the four truths and so on without error, and seeing the faults of samsara which belong to the truth of suffering, one becomes disgusted with samsara. This is becoming weary when one sees reality as it is. These two sentences show the training of higher wisdom. Faults will be separated from desire, which means that if one becomes weary of the aggregates of suffering in this way, one will abandon the cause of producing suffering, which belongs to the truth of origin, the afflictions of the three realms. Therefore, it is said that faults will be separated from desire. If one is separated from desire, one will be liberated, which means that if one abandons the afflictions of the path of seeing and the path of cultivation of the three realms in this way, the truth of cessation, nirvana, will become manifest. Therefore, it is said that if one is separated from desire, one will be liberated. These two sentences show that one has attained the aggregate of liberation. The wisdom-vision will arise, thinking, 'There is liberation, and I am liberated.' This means that after attaining nirvana in this way, such wisdom will arise: 'The suffering that should be known has been known, and now there is no need to know it. The origin that should be abandoned'
