It is a place where supreme merit is attained, therefore it is called "Increase of Merit." The gods born in this place are the result of cultivating roots of virtue more diligently than others of lower status. Because the result is also greater than other lower results, it is called "Great Result." The names of the five Pure Abodes are: Non-Great, Non-Affliction, Good Appearance, Good Vision, and Akanishta. Because the noble ones, such as Vairochana, primarily reside there, it is called the Pure Abode. Among those born in the Pure Abodes, even those who are born in the lower abodes have less merit than others, so they are called Non-Great. Those born in this place have attained special meditative states, so they cannot be afflicted by disturbing emotions, therefore they are called Non-Affliction. Those born in this place, no matter how they meditate, are not obscured or interrupted by disturbing emotions, so they are called Good Appearance. The gods born in this place, when seen by other gods, are seen as having a special quality of being very happy and peaceful, so they are called Good Vision. The gods born in this place are at the ultimate end of the Form Realm, and there are no other forms beyond that. Because it is above all, it is called Akanishta. What are the eight worldly dharmas? Gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and disrepute, pleasure and pain. Among these, the minds of the noble ones who have transcended the world are like Mount Meru, unshaken and undisturbed by any circumstances. But the minds of ordinary people, like small children, are like grass on a mountaintop, swayed by the winds of desire. Because even slight benefits and harms cause happiness and unhappiness, this difference is called worldly dharma. Among these, being happy because of obtaining a small amount of possessions, such as a begging bowl or Dharma robes, is gain. Not obtaining those possessions and being unhappy is loss. Being happy when virtues are praised openly is praise. Being upset when faults are pointed out openly is blame. Being happy when hearing virtues praised in secret is fame. Being unhappy when hearing faults criticized in secret is disrepute. Experiencing solitude in body and mind and feeling happy is pleasure. Body and mind

Suffering harm. Displeasure is unease. In order not to be defiled by these eight worldly concerns, people should also strive to learn to abide in equanimity. The names of the four 'enticements' are: enticing with the 'vehicle,' enticing with 'happiness,' enticing with 'reason,' and enticing with the 'dharma.' Among these, the ten virtuous actions, meditative stabilizations, and attainments are the 'vehicle' of gods and humans, and the four truths, the twelve links of dependent origination, the grounds, and the perfections are the 'vehicle' of the noble ones. Teaching these 'vehicles' is enticing with the 'vehicle.' All phenomena being without arising or ceasing is the one and only truth. Conventional truth and ultimate truth are the two truths. Suffering, origin, cessation, and path are the four truths. Teaching these is enticing with the truths. The reason of dependence, the reason of action, the reason of establishment, and the reason of the nature of phenomena, teaching these is enticing with reason. Establishing the twelve scriptures in the world, gathering them into the three baskets and teaching them, this is called enticing with the dharma. The names of the seven noble riches are: the riches of faith, the riches of discipline, the riches of diligence, the riches of shame, the riches of learning, the riches of generosity, and the riches of wisdom. Among these, believing in karma and its results, happiness, the existence of the Three Jewels, and those who possess qualities is the cause of discipline, it is the riches of faith. Abandoning evil and unwholesome actions such as killing is the cause of liberation and being born in higher realms, it is the riches of discipline. Listening to, contemplating, and meditating on the sacred Dharma without interruption is the cause of increasing the accumulation of merit and wisdom, it is the riches of diligence. Guarding against and holding back from evil and unwholesome dharmas is the cause of not giving rise to faults, it is the riches of shame. Not being content with a little, but listening to the sacred Dharma extensively is the cause of increasing the wisdom of thinking and meditating, it is the riches of learning. Giving away whatever possessions one has, internal and external, to others is the cause of obtaining great enjoyment, it is the riches of generosity. Understanding the meaning of the Dharma through the wisdom of thinking and meditating is the cause of attaining nirvana, it is the riches of wisdom. Why is it called 'riches'?

Because all necessities are available without exception. Among the nine abodes of sentient beings, those with different bodies and different perceptions are the practitioners of the first dhyana immediately after attaining it, and the sentient beings of the desire realm, down to the gods, have different bodies and different perceptions, so they are called having different bodies and different perceptions. Those with different bodies but the same perception are the Brahmas born earlier in the first dhyana, whose bodies and complexions are large and beautiful, and they think, "These later Brahmas were created by me." The Brahmas who have just attained the first dhyana have inferior bodies and complexions, and they think, "We were created by the Great Brahma," so they are called having different bodies but the same perception. Those with the same body but different perceptions are the gods abiding in the second dhyana and above, and the third dhyana and below, whose bodies are the same, of the same size, but their perceptions differ, some abiding in bliss and some abiding in equanimity, so they are called having the same body but different perceptions. Those with the same body and the same perception are those abiding in the fourth dhyana, whose bodies are of the same size, and their perceptions are also the same, endowed with the feeling of equanimity. The sphere of infinite space is the thought that all phenomena are merely space, and space is infinite. The sphere of infinite consciousness is the thought that all phenomena are infinite like space, and the consciousness that focuses on that is also infinite. The sphere of nothingness is the thought that all phenomena are infinite like space, and the consciousness that focuses on that is also infinite, so what other phenomena are there besides that? If one investigates in this way, since one does not see anything existing, one thinks that there is nothing at all. The sentient beings of neither perception nor non-perception are those who think that all phenomena are merely space, and that there is nothing at all, and that such perception is like a disease and a pain, so it should be abandoned. Thus, they gradually restrain it, making it extremely subtle, and they think that it is not right for perception to disappear completely, so they abide in that extremely subtle state. Among the five lineages, the lineage of the Hearers' Vehicle is the presence of the habitual imprints of hearing and meditating on the Four Noble Truths in the continuum. The lineage of the Solitary Buddhas' Vehicle is the presence of the habitual imprints of hearing and meditating on dependent origination.
