Eating with both mouth and anus refers to ministers like the nose, who exploit both superiors and subordinates. For example, like a horse eating grass from both its mouth and anus. A small dog with a sharp mouth refers to ministers being more sharp-tongued than kings, and women being more sharp-tongued than men. This is a sign of ministers and women engaging in verbal trickery. For example, like a big dog being obedient, while a small dog is sharp-tongued. A cow wanting to suckle from its calf immediately after giving birth is a sign of parents treating their children like this: as soon as they establish a household and acquire wealth, they say, "I have given you all my possessions, now you should take care of me." This is a sign of expecting to receive charity again. For example, like a cow wanting to suckle from its calf. Flourishing in the morning and declining in the evening refers to starting any task with great ambition, as if undertaking a major project, but quickly becoming weary and abandoning it. For example, like flourishing in the morning and aging by the evening without lasting even a few days. A lion's corpse being eaten by its own worms signifies that when this sacred Dharma declines, outsiders cannot refute or destroy it, but rather the monks themselves destroy it. For example, no other bird or dog can eat a lion's corpse, but worms are born from the lion's own fur and eat it. Many monkeys gathering together and appointing one monkey as king signifies that many immoral monks gather together and say, "We should appoint someone who agrees with us as leader." This is a sign of appointing a wicked person as leader. One monkey smearing another with unclean things is a sign of monks slandering and falsely accusing each other. The names of the three miracles are the miracle of magical power, the miracle of instruction, and the miracle of mind-reading. Showing things that are impossible for ordinary people, which will be explained in detail below, is the miracle of magical power. Among them, flying in the sky from the body, burning like fire, and transforming and showing various joys and sorrows at will is the miracle of magical power. Knowing the minds of others and speaking of their faults and virtues,

Showing that I am in accordance with the mind is the miracle of general expression, like an instruction. After examining which affliction is predominant in the mindstream, if desire is strong, then contemplate impurity; if hatred is strong, then cultivate loving-kindness; if delusion is strong, then contemplate dependent origination, and so on. Showing which is the antidote is the miracle of subsequent manifestation. What are the twelve qualities of purification? They are: wearing rag robes, having three robes, wearing felt robes, being a single-seater, being an almsman, not taking food later, being a forest dweller, being a tree dweller, being without shelter, being a cemetery dweller, being a constant sitter, and being a dweller wherever. Attachment to livelihood, the necessities of life, and places is a fault, while non-attachment to these is called the quality of purification. Among these, the first four show non-attachment to robes, the middle two show non-attachment to livelihood, and the last six show non-attachment to places. Among these, not being attached to good and new robes, but collecting old, torn pieces of cloth and patches from the dust heap, sewing them together and wearing them, is therefore called wearing rag robes. Searching from the dust heap, and not searching for more than three robes, is therefore called having three robes. If patches are not found, collecting wool and having about three felt robes is therefore called wearing felt robes. Finding one's own seat and not searching for another seat from then until dawn, and not sitting on another's seat, but sitting on that, is therefore called being a single-seater. Not being attached to the good food offered by patrons such as kings and ministers out of faith, but being content with whatever food is obtained by begging, is therefore called being an almsman. Taking only enough food to fill the stomach at one time, not distinguishing the types of delicacies, not being picky, and not asking for more and eating, is therefore called not taking food later. Living one yojana (about 11 kilometers) away from noisy places such as villages and towns is therefore called being a forest dweller. If that forest is like a forest, then living under a tree is therefore called being a tree dweller. Not building tents and houses in that forest, but living there, is therefore called being without shelter. If that forest is in a place where corpses are discarded, then living there is therefore called being a cemetery dweller. Not preparing a comfortable bed in that forest, but spreading a grass mat and not sleeping on the ground, is therefore called being a constant sitter.
