Saying "My eternal self is also like that" is an extreme of neither being nor non-being. What are the four reliances? One should rely on the meaning, not on the words. One should rely on the Dharma, not on the person. One should rely on wisdom, not on consciousness. One should rely on the sutras of definitive meaning, not on the sutras of provisional meaning. One should practice these teachings, not separate from them, rely on them and become familiar with them, this is called reliance. That is, the result of diligently practicing the Dharma beyond the world, the Dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, the activity of the mind, in an instant purifying the three realms and manifesting the omniscient wisdom, this is the meaning, and one should rely on it. Words and phrases refer to engaging in many worldly affairs, or studying and teaching the eighty-four thousand doors of Dharma, following words and letters, these are small meanings, and one should not rely on them. Completely purified and impure Dharmas, the cause and effect relationship is not reversed and not confused, or the nature of meaning has not arisen, and the person who truly proclaims what has not arisen, no matter what kind of person, as long as it does not contradict the Dharma, one should rely on them. For those who have not been observed, who speak carelessly, and whose behavior is inconsistent with the Dharma, even if they are princes, one should not be close to them, this is called relying on the Dharma, not relying on the person. Knowing that the nature of all Dharmas is without arising and ceasing in the ultimate truth, and knowing that Dharmas and persons are without self, this is wisdom, and one should rely on it and become familiar with it. Following after forms, sounds, smells, and the like, the five objects of desire, and so on, is called consciousness, and one should not be attached to it, not abide in it, and not rely on it, this is called relying on wisdom, not relying on consciousness. The Dharma that reveals and enables one to understand the profound and vast meaning is called the sutra of definitive meaning, and one should rely on it and become familiar with it. Showing weariness of samsara and entering into conventionalities, and so on, is the sutra of provisional meaning, and one should not rely on it and become familiar with it.

Then one should rely on the sutras of definitive meaning, and not rely on the sutras of provisional meaning. What are the four objects of gathering? They are generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and acting in accordance with the Dharma. Among them, satisfying others with the necessary enjoyments of the body, such as food and distribution, is generosity. After satisfying the mind, teaching and explaining the excellent Dharma, turning them away from non-virtue and placing them in virtue, is kind speech. Not only speaking in words, but also practicing in accordance with what is said, is beneficial action. Just as one teaches the Dharma to others, one also acts in accordance with it, and also causes others to do so, is acting in accordance with the Dharma. What are the four unconditioned dharmas? They are analytical cessation and non-analytical cessation, space, and suchness. Among them, because it is not produced by any characteristic of cause and condition, it is called unconditioned. That is to say, these dharmas of the three realms are impermanent and suffering, and one does not cling to or enter into these five desirable qualities. If one does not enter into these, one will not accumulate habitual tendencies, and no fruit will arise, this is called analytical cessation. When contemplating forms and being distracted, even if sounds and smells arise, one does not contemplate them, because they have passed, so one does not accumulate habitual tendencies, and no fruit will arise. Similarly, focusing on sound without contemplating forms, etc., this is because there is no examination by wisdom, so it is called non-analytical cessation. There is no arising like cause and effect, but it is revealed by other things, this is space. The dharmata of all dharmas does not have cause and effect, this is called suchness. What are the four prophecies? They are the general prophecy, the differentiated prophecy, the prophecy after being asked, and the established prophecy. Among them, giving a definite answer to the questions asked by others is prophecy. That is to say, if one asks whether these sentient beings will die or not, then as long as they are sentient beings, there is no one who does not die, they will surely die, this teaching is the general prophecy. If one asks whether these sentient beings will be born or not, then when the afflictions are exhausted, they will no longer be reborn in the three realms due to the power of karma.
