Knowing that consciousness with its predispositions is without substance is killing an Arhat. Realizing the emptiness of the Dharmadhatu with wisdom is called drawing blood from the Tathagata, which is a change of name. Or, to perceive something without essence as having essence, to have conviction in what is inverted, if one is deluded by afflictions, one will attain supreme enlightenment. It is said that by meditating without distraction, abiding in turning away from what is inverted, practicing the teachings with various hardships, and combining them in order, one will attain Buddhahood by practicing in this way, which is a change of name, and is a flexible understanding of the change. What are the four reasons? They are the reason of dependence, the reason of function, the reason of proof, and the reason of nature. Reason is how things exist and arise in the world. For example, eye consciousness cannot arise on its own, but must depend on the eye faculty and the object of form. Similarly, other things can be applied. For example, a sprout depends on a seed to arise, and action depends on ignorance to arise, which is the reason of dependence. When eye consciousness arises, it has the function of seeing forms, but it does not hear sounds. The eye faculty also only produces eye consciousness, and does not produce other consciousnesses such as ear consciousness. Similarly, apply this to everything. For example, a barley seed only produces barley, and does not produce other crops such as buckwheat, which is the reason of function. It can also be called establishing validity, which is to establish inference, direct perception, and scriptural authority. Among them, inference is like knowing fire from smoke, and knowing water from waterfowl. Direct perception is what is seen by the six consciousnesses, and what is seen by the mind of a yogi. Scriptural authority is the words of the Buddha, which are not deceptive. These are the reasons of proof. Like water flowing downwards, the sun rising from the east, the earth being hard, water being wet, fire being hot, and wind being light, and emptiness and selflessness, the characteristics of general and specific, are naturally abiding in that way, which is called the reason of nature. The four knowledges.

What are they? They are the knowledge of realms, the knowledge of nature, the knowledge of intention, and the knowledge of latent tendencies. Among them, understanding the various different dispositions of the Great and Small Vehicles is the knowledge of realms. The terms realm, disposition, and seed all have the same meaning. Understanding the differences between sentient beings with sharp faculties, dull faculties, and intermediate faculties is the knowledge of nature. Understanding which of the perfections, such as the six perfections and the ten perfections, one is inclined towards is the knowledge of intention. Understanding the relative strength of the seeds of virtue and non-virtue, such as faith and diligence, or desire and hatred, is the knowledge of latent tendencies. What are the four types of birth? They are birth from a womb, birth from an egg, birth from moisture, and miraculous birth. Among them, humans and domestic animals such as cattle and sheep, as well as wild beasts, are mostly born from a womb. Birds, fish, frogs, snails, and insects are born from eggs. Worms are born from moisture. Gods of the higher realms, as well as demons, spirits, hungry ghosts, and hell beings, are born miraculously. What are the four extremes? They are the extreme of existence, the extreme of non-existence, the extreme of both existence and non-existence, and the extreme of neither existence nor non-existence. All phenomena, internal and external, are composed of dust, darkness, and courage, and therefore exist. To take external phenomena as an example, beautiful and pleasing things such as flowers are mostly composed of courage; unpleasant things such as thorns and dangerous valleys are mostly composed of darkness; and grains, fruits, and foods are mostly composed of dust, thus it is said to be the extreme of existence. Worldly materialists say that there is no such thing as karma and its results, past and future lives, etc., which is the extreme of non-existence. The self is permanent and exists, but the city where objects and faculties arise does not exist, which is the extreme of both existence and non-existence. The Samkhyas believe that the color of gold never changes, so it is not non-existent; but if it is hammered by a blacksmith, it will change into other shapes, so it is not existent. It is like that.
