The four continents and the six desire realm heavens, totaling twenty abodes, are the desire realm. The seventeen abodes from the first to the fourth dhyanas are the form realm. The four abodes from the sphere of infinite space to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception are the formless realm. What are the signs of the three modes of reasoning? They are presence in the probandum, presence in similar instances, and absence in dissimilar instances. This means that even though the object of knowledge is not manifest, it is established through a process of inference, which is called the sign of the three modes. For example, even if fire and water are not visible, the mere appearance of smoke and waterfowl allows us to infer the presence of fire and water, which is presence in the probandum. Inferring the presence of fire in a large pile of firewood is presence in similar instances, because the firewood and the presence of fire are similar. Inferring the absence of fire in water is absence in dissimilar instances, because they are dissimilar, like enemies to each other. What are the three kinds of suffering? They are the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioning. This means that the three kinds of feelings in the three realms are pervaded by the three kinds of suffering, hence they are called the three sufferings. That is to say, although beings in the desire realm possess all three kinds of feelings, they are predominantly characterized by painful feelings, and thus are pervaded by the suffering of suffering. The gods of the form realm mostly abide in meditation and therefore mostly possess pleasant feelings. Although they are temporarily happy, they do not remain there forever, because they exhaust their lifespan and are reborn elsewhere, and thus are pervaded by the suffering of change. In the formless realm, the four mental aggregates exist in a momentary stream, and therefore possess neutral feelings. Ordinary beings do not perceive this as suffering, but noble beings see it as suffering. As the sutra says: A single hair placed on the palm, people do not notice, but if it enters the eye, it causes discomfort and harm. Children are like the palm, not noticing the hair of the suffering of conditioning. The wise are like the eye, and therefore the mind is greatly disturbed. The sutra says that children do not have the thought of suffering even in the aggregates of the Avici hell, while noble beings, even at the peak of existence,

The thought of suffering arises, which indicates that it is pervaded by the suffering of formations. What are the three countless eons? One from the stage of practice with aspiration to the first ground, one from the first ground to the eighth ground, and one from the eighth ground to the tenth ground. The first eon is from the immeasurable lifespan, decreasing to eighty thousand years, and then gradually decreasing to a human lifespan of ten years, this is one intermediate eon. Then again, the lifespan increases to eighty thousand years, and then gradually decreases to a lifespan of ten years, this is the second eon between increase and decrease. Like this, eighteen times, and finally again from a lifespan of ten years increasing to eighty thousand years, the first is the eon of decrease, like this, twenty intermediate eons the world forms. Twenty intermediate eons the world exists, twenty intermediate eons the world is destroyed, twenty intermediate eons the world is empty. Eighty intermediate eons are called one great eon, like this, beyond the limit of counting is one countless eon, the stage of practice with aspiration, below the eighth ground, below the Buddha ground of universal light, like this, each eon corresponds one by one in order. What are the three kinds of people? The doubter, the wrong knower, the ignorant. The characteristics of the Dharma are impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, or is it not so? The mind is not certain, this is the doubter. To definitely hold that all phenomena are permanent, happy, pure, and have self, this is the wrong knower. Not knowing any cause of the characteristics of the Dharma, impermanence and permanence, etc., this is the ignorant. What are the three uncommon abidings? Equanimity towards those who listen respectfully, equanimity towards those who do not listen respectfully, and equanimity towards those who listen respectfully and those who do not listen respectfully. These are not possessed by hearers and solitary realizers, but only by Buddhas, the uncommon abidings. That is to say, even if the disciples and retinue are respectful and offer service, and diligently listen to the Dharma, there is no particular joy, so the mind towards those who listen respectfully
