Having attained merits, it is a joy and happiness where the opposing side is diminished. Joy is the second dhyana, which is joy and happiness born from the distinction of samadhi through the practice of antidotes. Happiness is the third dhyana, because if there is joy, then its opposite, unhappiness, will also arise, so joy is abandoned. By abandoning joy, its opposite, unhappiness, is also abandoned, and it is a state of equanimity. That is, since happiness is not abandoned, it is called happiness. Equanimity is the fourth dhyana, because if there is happiness in the lower realms, then its opposite, suffering, will also arise, so that happiness is also abandoned. By abandoning happiness, its opposite, the suffering of breathing in and out, is also abandoned, and it is a state of equanimity, characterized by abandoning both happiness and suffering. What are the four immeasurables? They are immeasurable loving-kindness, immeasurable compassion, immeasurable joy, and immeasurable equanimity. These four immeasurables are like worldly people having loving-kindness for their children and relatives for a short time, and the Shravakas only benefit a small number of sentient beings, not like loving-kindness, but rather generating loving-kindness and compassion for all sentient beings as if they were their only child. Among them, loving-kindness is the thought of benefiting all sentient beings by placing them in happiness. Compassion is the thought of benefiting all sentient beings by freeing them from afflictions and eliminating suffering. Joy is the thought that it is good to have benefited and brought happiness to sentient beings as before. Equanimity is the state of leaving sentient beings in equanimity because those who have already attained happiness and liberation do not need to be liberated again. What are the four formless absorptions? They are the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. These four formless absorptions are the four aggregates of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness in the formless realm, freely abiding in four states, focusing on them with one-pointedness. Among them, the sphere of infinite space is the thought that if all phenomena are individually broken down, there is no substance, but only space, and that space is also infinite.

It is called the Sphere of Infinite Consciousness. The Sphere of Infinite Consciousness is when all phenomena are exhausted as mere space, and that space is also considered infinite. The samadhi that arises from associating with the perception of focusing on the infinity of space, and the consciousness that is also infinite like space, is called the Sphere of Infinite Consciousness. The Sphere of Nothingness is when, having arisen from the Sphere of Infinite Consciousness, one contemplates what object there is to focus on beyond consciousness. Not seeing even a small portion of form or formless phenomena, one believes and dwells in nothingness, which is called the Sphere of Nothingness. The Sphere of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception is when, having arisen from the Sphere of Nothingness, one contemplates this perception as being like a disease, a sore, or a thorn. One then blocks this perception, making it increasingly subtle. Thinking that if this perception were completely absent, one would become ignorant and that would not be right, one dwells in an extremely subtle perception and enters into equipoise. Thus, since coarse perception is neither present nor completely absent, it is called the Sphere of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception. The eight liberations are called liberations because they liberate from the bonds of affliction. These eight are to be combined with the eight grounds that will be explained below. Among them, 'Having form, one sees forms' is the first liberation. This is the samadhi of destroying and refuting external forms as empty, without having previously destroyed one's own form. It is called 'Having form, one sees forms.' The principle of liberation is as previously explained, and can be applied to all. 'Perceiving formlessness internally, one sees external forms' is the second liberation. This means that one's own form is destroyed by making its parts empty, which is called 'perceiving formlessness internally.' 'Seeing external forms' means refuting external forms such as cloth and vases as empty, which is the same as before. 'The liberation of ugliness' is the third liberation, where one dwells having realized and perfected it with the body. Having previously refuted internal and external phenomena as empty, afflictions such as desire do not arise. However, in order to be aware of whether desire arises when seeing forms, one focuses on impure forms.
