In the interval before my departure, the six consciousnesses are called the discerning consciousness. The consciousnesses below the gathering consciousness are called the abiding consciousness. Among them, discerning is to act. Abiding is to settle into samadhi. These consciousnesses are also combined in three ways, outer, inner, and both. When twenty consciousnesses arise from focusing on the inner body, it is called the inner consciousness. Similarly, the three types of consciousnesses that focus on the outer body and the inner and outer bodies, all single-mindedly abide in impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, which is called mindfulness of the mind. Dharma is the dharma of complete defilement and complete purification, that is, the above twenty consciousnesses are associated with afflictions and near afflictions, which is called complete defilement. Being associated with the antidotes to abandon these afflictions, such as impurity, love, and dependent origination, is called complete purification. Realizing and meditating on emptiness and selflessness on these dharmas is called mindfulness of dharma. By meditating on these, the four inversions are abandoned, that is, by meditating on mindfulness of the body as impure, the perception of purity is abandoned. By meditating on mindfulness of feeling as suffering, the perception of pleasure is abandoned. By meditating on mindfulness of the mind as impermanent, the perception of permanence is abandoned. By meditating on mindfulness of dharma as selfless, the perception of self is abandoned. Meditating on and realizing the four truths are also these themselves, namely the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. These four are combined one by one in order. The four right abandonments are: to generate desire in order not to generate unwholesome and evil dharmas that have not yet arisen. To generate desire in order to abandon unwholesome and evil dharmas that have already arisen. To generate desire in order to generate wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen. To generate desire in order to maintain, increase, grow, not decline, and perfect wholesome dharmas that have already arisen. In the previous chapter on mindfulness, when meditating on mindfulness of dharma, completely defiled dharmas are the opposing side.
