It should not be like throwing away something that exists and becoming non-existent, thereby becoming emptiness. Ultimately, emptiness is the nature of emptiness from the very beginning, so there is no discarding, accepting, or abandoning with respect to emptiness. Therefore, if someone thinks there is something in it, it is said that there is nothing. Self-nature emptiness refers to conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, which are not made empty by śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas. That is, starting from form, all conditioned and unconditioned dharmas are originally pervaded by emptiness, and the self-nature abides in emptiness. This is not something that śrāvakas and other noble ones seek and deliberately make empty, but it originally abides in emptiness, so it is called self-nature emptiness. The emptiness of all dharmas refers to the skandhas, dhātus, āyatanas, the three realms, conditioned and unconditioned things. That is, among the two characteristics of self and common of the internal and external dharmas such as the skandhas, here, as the common characteristic, all dharmas are impermanent, suffering, empty, and selfless. For those who think there are things in these, or ultimately, all dharmas are without self-nature, for those who think there are things in these, it is said that there are no things. Self-characteristic emptiness refers to the range from "form is the characteristic of destruction" to "consciousness is the characteristic of discernment." Among them, there are also earth is solid, water is moist, fire is warm, wind is light, from these up to "omniscience is the characteristic of direct perception." Among the two characteristics, if one thinks that these self-characteristics have things, it is also said that these things do not exist. Unobtainable emptiness refers to the dharmas of the three times. That is, the internal and external dharmas have never become substantial at any time in the past, present, and future, because they have never been observed as things, so it is called unobtainable emptiness. Non-thing emptiness, self-nature emptiness, and non-thing self-nature emptiness refer to all dharmas arising and abiding in dependence.
