Because it generates various (things), it is a collection. What is the aggregate of consciousness? It is the ability to recognize objects, which refers to the eight consciousnesses each recognizing their respective objects. Mind and intellect are also the same, because they have diversity and serve as the basis of intellect. The so-called mind is the meaning of diversity, that is, from the eye, ear, etc., up to the consciousness of the intellect, these six each engage with various dharmas of different self-objects. The cessation of the previous consciousness is called intellect, because it is the cause of generating the subsequent consciousness, so it is called the basis of intellect. In reality, the mind is the Ālayavijñāna, which is the accumulation of the seeds of all actions. Although the six consciousnesses are also called mind, when it is finally determined, mind refers to the Ālayavijñāna. Why? Because the meaning of the word mind is accumulation, and the Ālayavijñāna also accumulates the habitual tendencies of all good, non-good, and neutral actions in each moment. It is also uninterrupted in terms of object and aspect. The object of the Ālayavijñāna is not sometimes taken and sometimes not taken, but it is uninterruptedly taken with respect to all the container and content world. Because it cannot clearly distinguish the differences between blue and yellow, etc., the aspect is uninterrupted. The aggregate of grasping consciousness is also it, because it grasps the body. The so-called taking the body in the next life is not the action of a permanent self, but the mind takes the body, that is, from grasping blood and semen in the womb until it dies, it holds the body, so it is said that the aggregate of grasping consciousness is also it. This explains that the six consciousnesses such as the eye and the permanent self are not the ones who take the body. In reality, the intellect takes the Ālayavijñāna as its object and always possesses four aspects. Just like the previous six consciousnesses were called mind, but in reality mind is the Ālayavijñāna, here too, the one that arises immediately after the cessation of the previous six consciousnesses is called intellect, but in reality it does not refer to it, here it refers to the afflicted intellect.

It is called "mind." If it is consciousness, it cannot be without an object of focus, so the object of focus is the basis of all. If it is mind, it cannot be without mental events, so the mental events are the four types of delusion about self, views about self, pride in self, attachment to self, and the five omnipresent mental factors, totaling nine mental events as its retinue. The six entering consciousnesses should also be understood accordingly, as they appear in other sutras. The phrase "should be understood accordingly" refers to the six consciousnesses from eye consciousness to mind consciousness. That is, eye consciousness relies on the eye faculty, focuses on forms, and thereby fully understands forms. This should be applied similarly to all other consciousnesses, such as ear consciousness. Mind consciousness relies on the mind faculty, focuses on phenomena, and thereby fully understands phenomena. This should be understood in this way. The question "What are the twelve sources?" refers to the fact that the six consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, arise and become like a cause or a door for arising, so they are called sources. Specifically, they are the eye source, the form source, the ear source, the sound source, the nose source, the smell source, the tongue source, the taste source, the body source, the touch source, the mind source, and the phenomena source. That is, relying on the faculties such as the eye, focusing on the objects, the six consciousnesses arise, so the six faculties and the six objects are called the twelve sources. Among them, the eight consciousnesses belonging to the aggregate of consciousness are all included in the mind source. Cessation through discrimination and cessation not through discrimination, as well as space, suchness, feeling, perception, formation, and non-representation, these eight phenomena are all included in the phenomena source. The others are easy to understand. The question "What are the eighteen elements?" refers to the six root elements, the six object elements, and the six consciousness elements, totaling eighteen elements. Among them, the six faculties are called the basis, the six objects are called the object of focus, and the six consciousnesses are called the dependent.
