Furthermore, it is not reasonable. Therefore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then afflictions cannot be abandoned, and therefore, liberation from saṃsāra, nirvāṇa, will also not be attained. On the other hand, if it is asserted that there is no ālaya, then during the samādhi of non-perception, and non-perception itself, and during the samādhi of cessation, all the consciousnesses that enter cease and are non-existent. Therefore, when arising from that, upon what does it depend to arise? Thus, it is evident that there is an ālaya-vijñāna. With how many mental factors does it accord? It accords with the five omnipresent [mental factors]. Among the three feelings, it accords with neutral feeling, because the ālaya-vijñāna is unspecified. The two feelings are the cause of desire and hatred, and because they are able to produce maturation, they should not accord with the ālaya. Among these, the feeling of pleasure is the maturation of virtuous actions. The feeling of suffering is the maturation of non-virtuous actions. Neutral feeling is said to be the maturation of both virtuous and non-virtuous [actions]. Therefore, the maturation of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, which is the neutral feeling that accords with the ālaya-vijñāna, is itself maturation. The two are called maturation because they arise from maturation. The object and discernment of the ālaya are subtle and non-manifest. Because others cannot realize it, it is called that which has an object that is not completely cut off and an aspect that is not completely cut off. For example, when the light of the sun appears, the light of the moon and stars, although present, is not manifest. Likewise, due to the power of coarse conceptualization, the subtle is not realized. It is not obscured by the four afflictions of the afflicted mind-basis. It is the nature of maturation, that is, maturation does not produce other maturation from that. Because it is not specified as virtuous or non-virtuous, it is unspecified, and therefore it is called obscured and unspecified. The two truths are the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. Among these, the conventional truth is that the knowledge that is accompanied by conceptualization does not realize that which is to be seen as the suchness of phenomena. It is also called that which is truly obscured by obscuration. On the other hand, all phenomena are without self-nature and empty, but

The appearance and arising of things, such as the vessel world, are true only in the conventional terms and fame of the world. It is also stated in the Madhyamaka treatises that this is something everyone knows. From the teachings expounded by Inexhaustible Intelligence and others, all that is expressed in words, phrases, and letters is said to be the conventional truth. In short, things cannot withstand scrutiny, and although they are without inherent existence, they appear to be able to function immediately. This much of truth is called the conventional truth. The ultimate truth is the unchanging nature of all phenomena, which is both the meaning and the supreme, hence the ultimate. Alternatively, it is explained as being for the sake of the supreme meaning. The wisdom that realizes the emptiness of things is the object of the supreme, hence the supreme meaning. For those noble ones who see the suchness of the Dharma, it is true in this way, and therefore it is called the ultimate truth. Selflessness is of two types: the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. What is the selflessness of persons? The term "person" refers to those with evil intellect and wrong conceptions who imagine that there is a self, a purusha, within the body, who is an agent, an enjoyer, permanent, unitary, and independent. They cling to this and give it names such as sentient being, life, and person. Because there is a permanent, unitary self, it is this self that experiences the results of whatever actions are performed. Whoever is bound is also liberated by this self. Whoever saw it first also recognizes it separately. Whoever established it also remembers it. If the self were not permanent but momentary, then the agent would be different and the enjoyer would be different. Thus, the fault would arise that one person performs the action but another experiences the result, one person is bound but another is liberated, and so on. Therefore, they assert that there is a permanent, unitary self. But this is not possible, because permanence is unchanging, so it is impossible for the agent and the enjoyer, two incompatible qualities, to be one and the same. Even if one were to say, "Whoever is bound is liberated by that same self," in addition to the faults mentioned above, all sentient beings are manifestly impermanent, and no one has ever seen a permanent, unitary self, which also contradicts direct perception. Recognition and memory should be applied in the same way. Therefore, the term "person" refers to the five aggregates and so on.
