Since there is no single, permanent self that is distinct, it is said that persons are without self. If that single, permanent self were not other than the five aggregates, then it would be momentary like the aggregates. Or, the aggregates would become permanent like the self. Since they become many and distinct like the aggregates, it would also become the fault of not being permissible as one. Thus, persons are without self. What is the selflessness of phenomena like? The term "phenomena" refers to the aggregates, elements, and sense sources. These can be briefly summarized as conditioned and unconditioned, and form and formless. These, too, are without inherent existence because they do not exist as either one or many. How so? If forms become a single entity, since it is one and without parts, there would be no distinctions such as visible and invisible, tangible and intangible, obstructive and non-obstructive, and it would be possible to reach all directions with a single step. If it is asserted that it has parts, then when analyzed by its parts, it cannot be established as a single entity. Even if it is said that there are indivisible atoms, there would be as many bodies as there are atoms. Since it does not allow others to arise in its own sphere, it has parts and cannot be established as one. If it cannot be established as one, then there is no time for accumulating it. Thus, since it is devoid of the nature of both one and many, it is not an entity. If formless phenomena, such as mind and mental factors, were one, since their nature would not change, many aspects such as virtue and non-virtue could not change, and all moments would become a single moment, and all three times would be exhausted in a single moment. If it is asserted that it has parts, then when analyzed by the parts of a moment, it cannot be truly established as an entity, and thus it cannot be one. Since it cannot be established as one, it cannot be established as many either, and since it is devoid of the nature of both one and many, it is not an entity. In another way, all conditioned phenomena are dependently arisen. Those that arise depending on causes and conditions without being established by their own nature are like illusions, and therefore without inherent existence. For unconditioned phenomena, such as space, if they were entities, they would become either one or many, which would be a fault.

It will become difficult to reverse. Therefore, all dharmas are not established as the nature of one and many. Because there is no entity, dharmas are called selfless. The three natures are the completely imputed nature, the dependent nature, and the thoroughly established nature. Among these, the completely imputed nature is the self-nature, or specifically, the imputation of names. Dependent arising, which appears as an illusion without self-nature, is the strong imputation of phenomena, including the apprehended and the apprehender, due to attachment to the various things that appear. Among these, self-nature is form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, and so on. Specifically, form is permanent, form is impermanent, form is completely afflicted, form is completely purified, and so on. The dependent nature refers to the dharmas of dependent arising that do not arise on their own but arise due to other causes and conditions. Although it can be applied to all internal and external dependent arisings, it actually refers to the arising of later and later mental and mental phenomena in dependence on earlier and earlier ones. The thoroughly established nature refers to suchness, nirvana, and the path. Among these, suchness is the dharma-nature of all dharmas, the unconditioned, free from the apprehended and the apprehender, and is the object of the path. Nirvana refers to the nature of the transformation of the basis, which is extremely immaculate suchness. The alaya-consciousness is completely purified, free from birth and death, and without the harm of conditioned phenomena, and is to be attained by the path. These two are unconditioned; because they do not change, they are called the unchanging thoroughly established nature. The path is conditioned; because it is through it that one can truly realize, it is called the non-inverted thoroughly established nature. In short, the thoroughly established nature is the suchness of all dharmas, which bodhisattvas can realize through the power of diligence and the power of proper attention, and through familiarizing themselves with that realization, they can also perfectly accomplish unsurpassed complete enlightenment.
