That which has is with cause. It is said to be with conditions. Without cause, without conditions, it is not so. There are also two types: outer and inner. External dependent origination also has two types: related to cause and related to condition. Among them, related to cause is from the sprouting of a seed to the bearing of fruit from a tree trunk. Related to condition is the arising of fruit from the aggregation of the six elements, namely the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the wind element, the space element, and the time element. Internal dependent origination also has two types: arising in accordance and not arising in accordance. Arising in accordance also has two types: related to cause and related to condition. Among them, related to cause is: because this exists, that arises; because this is born, that is born. For example, with ignorance as the condition, there are formations, and so on, with birth as the condition, there arise old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and agitation. Thus, this entire mass of suffering comes into being. Among them, ignorance is not knowing good and bad actions and their results, and not knowing the true meaning. Formations are the performance of good and bad actions. Consciousness is the alaya consciousness conditioned by karma connecting at the beginning of rebirth. Name and form are transformed into the five aggregates. The six sense sources are the complete faculties. Contact is the complete determination after the aggregation of the three. Feeling is experiencing the three types of feelings arising from contact. Craving is attachment to feeling and not being satisfied. Grasping is being driven by craving to seize and not let go. Becoming is the contaminated karma arising from grasping. Birth is the accomplishment of the result in accordance with becoming. Old age and death are the ripening and destruction of the aggregates. Sorrow is displeasure. Lamentation is speech arising from sorrow. Suffering is harm to the body. Purity is selflessness. These twelve links abide in pairs, and ignorance also makes sentient beings deluded.

It bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of name and form. Name and form also indicate each other. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of the six sense sources. The six sense sources also show the distinct separation of their respective objects. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of contact. Contact also makes contact with the object. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of feeling. Feeling also experiences what is pleasant, unpleasant, and neither. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of craving. Craving also manifests attachment to things that will become objects of attachment. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of grasping. Grasping is purified by binding with all defilements. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of existence. Existence also causes the continuum of existence to abide elsewhere. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of birth. Birth also causes the aggregates to arise. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of aging. Aging also causes the faculties to completely change. It also bestows the cause for the manifestation and accomplishment of death. Death also causes formations to disintegrate. It also bestows the cause for the continuous non-cessation of complete ignorance. These twelve dharmas become five branches. The first three are the branch of projecting. The next four are the branch of being projected. The next three are the branch of manifest accomplishment. Birth is the branch of manifest accomplishment. Old age and death are the branch of faults.

Taking, existence, and grasping are afflictions. Action and existence are karma. The remaining seven are life, also called suffering. From three, two arise; from two, seven arise; and from seven, three arise again. Without beginning or end, it revolves without certainty. Furthermore, these are divided into three groups: the first two are the past; the middle eight are the present; and the last two are the future. Among these, ignorance and action are past afflictions and karma, which become the cause of the present. Consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, and feeling are the results of the present. Craving, grasping, and existence are present afflictions and karma, which become the cause of the future. Birth and aging and death are the results of the future. Condition and connection are the aggregation of the six elements, from which the aggregates are formed: the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the wind element, the space element, and the consciousness element. Among these, the earth element is the solidity of the body. The water element is the cohesion and moisture of the body. The fire element is the warmth of the body. The wind element is the movement of the body. The space element is the internal cavities of the body. The consciousness element is the five consciousnesses and the defiled mind consciousness. By explaining dependent origination, it refutes the views of the tirthikas who believe that things arise from no cause, and those who believe that things arise from dissimilar causes, and shows that things arise from causes, are not permanent, are not annihilated, are not transferred, that great results arise from small causes, and that they arise in a similar continuum. How is it not permanent? The aggregates belonging to the part of death cease, and the aggregates belonging to the part of birth arise. How is it not annihilated? When the aggregates belonging to the part of death cease, at that very moment, the aggregates belonging to the part of birth arise like the high and low ends of a balance. How is it not transferred? Sentient beings die and transmigrate into different life forms. How do great results arise from small causes? By performing small actions, great results arise.
