I, will become unwholesome and unspecified in all three ways. Just as mental factors accord with virtue and so on. These are the pervasive mental factors, the specific objects, virtue, afflictions, near afflictions, and feelings also possess all three. They are the maturation of experiencing the results of virtue and non-virtue, as well as the seeds of one's own uninterrupted stream, the maturation of habitual tendencies, and both the habitual tendencies of similar causes, all of which are the Alaya consciousness and so on. These ways of engaging with objects are not what is taught, namely, the absence of perception, the attainment of the absence of perception, the attainment of cessation, fainting, and being overwhelmed by heavy sleep, then they cease. The afflicted mind does not arise dependent on the senses and other objects, but rather depends on the Alaya consciousness itself, and arises focusing on the Alaya consciousness itself. How does it arise dependent on it? The Alaya is the place of its seeds, just as the afflicted habitual tendencies reside within it, therefore it arises dependent on it. How does it focus on it? Like this, the afflicted mind is associated with the view of the aggregates and so on, therefore, with the aspect of "I" and "mine," it focuses on the Alaya consciousness itself. This is constantly associated with the five pervasive mental factors and the four obscured and unspecified afflictions. Among the three feelings, it is associated with the feeling of equanimity. The four afflictions are: the view of self, the ignorance of self, the pride of self, and the love of self. What is obscured by these four is afflicted. Obscured consciousness cannot be associated with non-virtue. Therefore, the afflicted mind is not associated with non-virtue, so it cannot project maturation, and in the manner of grasping at self, I want to give, I want to kill, I want to draw, and so on, in the state of doing good and non-good, and unspecified actions, what arises is also unspecified. This is the Arhat, and those who have attained the path beyond the world, and cessation.

It arises at all times except when abiding in equipoise. For afflicted minds and the unspecified, there are only similar habitual tendencies, and so on. The ālaya-vijñāna is the basis of the seeds of all virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified dharmas, therefore it is the ālaya. In another way, all dharmas and the reality of the fruit enter into and are related to it, or it enters into and is related to all dharmas as the reality of the cause, therefore it is the ālaya. Because it is the nature of consciousness, it is the vijñāna. Ālaya, one name is also called mind, because of virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified habitual tendencies, and so on. Again, one name is also called grasping consciousness, because when the body of whatever sentient being manifests and is born, it grasps the colored sense organs together with the body and grasps the name, therefore it is called grasping, and in the desire realm and the form realm, both are grasped. In the formless realm, only the four names are grasped. The existence of grasping consciousness is evident through scripture and reasoning. The scripture is as stated in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: “The grasping consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river, it is not permissible to conceive of it as self, this I have not taught to children.” And as stated in the *Mahāyāna Abhidharma Sūtra*: “Beginningless time is also the limit of time, it is the place of all dharmas, because it exists, all beings and nirvāṇa can also be attained.” This is what is said. The reasoning is that without the ālaya-vijñāna, it is not possible to transmigrate in saṃsāra, because there is no basis for the habitual tendencies of the seeds that cause transmigration, therefore it is not possible to transmigrate. It is also not possible to abandon afflictions without the ālaya, because in the entering consciousness itself, the incompatible side and the antidote cannot arise at the same time. When afflictions manifest, it is said to abandon them, but when a yogi enters the path, it is impossible for afflictions to manifest. When it is said to abandon them in the state of seeds, if the place where the seeds of afflictions reside must be abandoned by the antidote, then there is no other place for the seeds except the antidote, so it must be abandoned.
