Moreover, actions will not be in vain; when causes and conditions come together, they will ripen into fruit for sentient beings. If someone asks: How should this statement be understood? It means that it is said to those who do not regret, do not slander that action, do not rely on antidotes, have not practiced that action, and have not learned. By relying on antidotes, actions can be purified. Unintelligent people, even if they commit small sins, will fall into the lower realms, while intelligent people, even if they commit great harm, can purify it. It is like what is said in the scriptures: Even a small iron ball will sink to the bottom of the water, but the same thing made into a container, even if it is large, will float on the surface. This means that intelligent people, after doing wrong, are unhappy, regretful, and purify it through antidotes such as confession, which can be purified. Unintelligent people accumulate non-virtuous deeds and do not confess, so it will not become a sin. Immovable actions refer to meditation and absorption. Its power is to enter the realm of form without ceasing and to be born in the formless realm. The way to purify it is to dedicate that action to great Bodhi, to be free with actions, and to be born at will for the benefit of sentient beings. Virtuous actions refer to the actions that will experience happiness in the desire realm. Its power is that it will definitely be born there, and this is the way to completely purify it. In this way, dedicate the supreme virtuous action to perfect and complete enlightenment, and through the power of great aspiration, separate the fully ripened fruit, so that it will not become the cause of samsara, and will definitely attain supreme Bodhi. In this way, non-virtuous actions, immovable actions, virtuous actions, are all methods of complete purification. Second, showing the antidote to afflictions is: The power of afflictions is completely destroyed. It means that afflictions are things that are harmful to body and mind and cause affliction, such as greed and so on. The power of those afflictions is that, relying on those powers, all sentient beings do not know wisdom and ignorance, benefit and harm, heavy and light, etc., which is ignorance, knowingly committing greed and so on. Completely destroying refers to the power of relying on antidotes. The antidote to greed is the contemplation of impurity,

Meditating on disgust as an antidote to suffering, cultivating loving-kindness as an antidote to hatred, and analyzing dependent origination as an antidote to ignorance, and so on. In short, one should make afflictions one's own, and cultivate them as limbs of enlightenment. As it says in the chapter of Light Protector in the Great Heap of Jewels Sutra: Light Protector, just as poison that is completely controlled by mantras and medicine cannot cause death. Similarly, a Bodhisattva who is completely mastered by wisdom and skillful means cannot be completely overthrown even by the poison of afflictions. Light Protector, just as the dung of a great city is beneficial to sugarcane fields and vineyards. Light Protector, similarly, the dung of afflictions of a Bodhisattva is also beneficial to omniscience. Just like that, Bodhisattvas do not immediately abandon afflictions like the Hearers, but subdue afflictions with wisdom and means, and even with afflictions, they transform all actions into the cause of unsurpassed wisdom. For example, if one drinks poison and then takes good medicine, the poison will not rise; or, if one eats poison that has been blessed with mantras and the power of the poison has been killed, it will not be harmful but beneficial. It is also said in the Summary of the Great Vehicle: Afflictions are subdued but not abandoned, like poison killed by mantras. From the afflictions of the Buddhas, the exhaustion of afflictions is attained by the omniscient. In the state of a Bodhisattva, it is not that one completely indulges in afflictions, but one thinks that it is not right to completely pass into nirvana by the Hearer's vehicle, so one leaves behind residual habitual seeds. Therefore, afflictions themselves, through the exhaustion of afflictions, will become the cause of omniscience. Third, explaining the antidote to the power of the Maras: The powers of the Maras are all made powerless. That is, of the four Maras, the subduing of the Mara of afflictions has already been explained above, and what remains are the Mara of the aggregates, the Mara of death, and the Mara of the sons of the gods. The power of these is to make one experience suffering and not escape from samsara.

and obstructs the practice of Bodhisattvas. To weaken the power of the skandha-mara is to weaken it with the power of being skilled in the skandha of wisdom. As it says in the "Sutra of the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect": What is a Bodhisattva's skill in the skandhas? It is like showing an example with foam, showing a water bubble, showing a mirage, showing a banana tree trunk, showing an illusion, showing a dream, showing an echo, showing an eye disease, showing an image, and showing a transformation. Why is that? Form is like a mass of foam. A mass of foam is not self, not sentient being, not life, not nourishment, not person, not individual. Whatever is the nature of illusion, that is also the nature of consciousness. Whoever is skilled in this is called a Bodhisattva skilled in the skandhas. The skandhas are like dreams, like eye diseases, like images, like transformations. Even in transformations, there is no self, and so on, as explained extensively. And in the "Noble Perfection of Wisdom Sutra," it says: Form is empty of form. Feeling is empty of feeling. Perception is empty of perception. Formation is empty of formation. Consciousness is empty of consciousness. And so on. Thus, understanding that the skandhas are selfless and empty, all harm and suffering cannot affect one, thus weakening the power of the maras. The Lord of Death Mara is the law of death and change. Its power is to die without freedom. To weaken the power of the Lord of Death Mara is to gain power over life and birth. As it says in the "Sutra of the Ten Bhumis": In order to bless life for countless eons, one gains complete power over life. By showing all births in all realms of the world, one gains power over birth. The son of the gods mara obstructs Bodhisattvas from practicing virtue, and even at the time of complete enlightenment. To weaken its power is that the mara comes to deceive, and knowing it as it is, one is not deceived and can endure.
