Furthermore, the mental activity of distinguishing individual characteristics, and the mental activity arising from faith and understanding, possess the antidote to dispel obstacles, and are conforming mental activities. The mental activity of complete solitude and the mental activity of ultimate union possess the antidote to abandon obstacles, and are antidote mental activities. The mental activity of gathering joy possesses the antidote to hold everything, and is the initial mental activity. The mental activity of examination possesses the antidote to extend boundaries, and is the mental activity of discriminating awareness. The mental activity of the fruit of ultimate union is the fruit of those. The method of determining measure is that the fruit of completely cultivating the small, medium, and large concentrations is the three birth places of the first concentration. The fruit of completely cultivating the small, medium, and large states of the second, third, and fourth concentrations in the state of ordinary beings is the three birth places of the state of ordinary beings of the second, third, and fourth concentrations. The five pure abodes, by completely cultivating the small, medium, large, very large, and extremely large states, give rise to five births in the five pure abodes in sequence. The method of naming and establishing is that the samadhi included in the four concentrations, the samadhi in which the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas enter into equipoise, the names of those are also unknown to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, so there exists the naming and establishing of all those. Therefore, they have shown the establishment. If asked how to recognize through establishment, from the first concentration to the fourth concentration that is perfected, it is called completely pure. Thus, those four concentrations are also called concentration, also called samadhi, also called tranquility, also called one-pointedness, and also called dwelling in bliss in this life, therefore it is called the object of dwelling in bliss in this life, because in those places there is the object in which the mind dwells, so it has been shown. In those places, the object in which the mind dwells, what is the object of focus?

If it arises, then, therefore, the meaning of the object of focus as a means of completely liberating from all suffering is explained. The object of focus is those four objects of focus. In that ground, focusing on those objects of focus, the object in which the mind abides arises, and it should be connected in this way. So, what are the four objects of focus? They are the pervasive object of focus, the object of focus for purifying practice, the skillful object of focus, and the object of focus for subduing afflictions. So, what is the pervasive object of focus? That also has four aspects, namely, the image with conceptualization, the image without conceptualization, the limit of things, and the complete collection of necessities. So, what is the object of focus for purifying practice? That is fivefold, namely, the impure, loving-kindness, dependent arising by this very condition, the differentiation of elements, and mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. So, what is the skillful object of focus? That also has five aspects, namely, skill in aggregates, skill in elements, skill in sources, skill in dependent arising, and skill in what is and is not. So, what is the object of focus for subduing afflictions? That is twofold, namely, mundane and supramundane. Among them, the mundane is twofold, namely, the peacefulness of the lower grounds. The supramundane has four aspects, namely, the noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of origin, the noble truth of cessation, and the noble truth of the path. Thus, those four objects of focus are objects of focus by means of detachment from desire through the mundane and supramundane paths, and therefore they are called objects of focus by means of completely liberating from all suffering. There, the object in which the mind abides arises focusing on those objects of focus, thereby indicating the object of focus. In that ground, what is the nature of the object in which the mind abides that arises focusing on those objects of focus? It is knowing the four noble truths. And how is that? When the initial yogi cultivates the four close placements of mindfulness, he enters the four noble truths, and makes it firm with the four right abandonments.
