A Commentary on the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, by Nāgadhvaja. A Commentary on the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, by Nāgadhvaja. After that, the meaning of the words that are skilled in summarizing the ultimate, etc., will be explained. That is, one should be skilled in summarizing the limits of the six perfections into six kinds of ultimate ways. Therefore, it was asked, "For what reason, O Blessed One, should these bases of learning be understood as being established as six?" The answer is: "For two reasons, namely, for the sake of benefiting sentient beings and for the sake of being the antidote to afflictions." That is, for the sake of fully maturing external sentient beings, and for the sake of fully maturing one's own Dharma of the Buddhas, this is said in order. Among them, three are for benefiting sentient beings, namely, generosity, discipline, and patience. That is, benefiting by closely accomplishing benefit, benefiting by not closely accomplishing harm, and benefiting by accepting harm from others, this is said in order. Just by these, other sentient beings will be fully matured. Three should be understood as being the antidote to afflictions, namely, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. That is, antidoting afflictions by applying the mind to the side of virtue, antidoting afflictions by completely suppressing them, and antidoting afflictions by thoroughly destroying the latent tendencies, this is said in order. Just by these, one's own Dharma of the Buddhas will be fully matured. Among them, benefiting by closely accomplishing benefit is shown by "benefiting by the benefit of closely accomplishing resources." Benefiting by not closely accomplishing harm is shown by "benefiting by the benefit of discipline not closely accomplishing poverty, harm, and conflict." Benefiting by accepting harm from others is shown by "benefiting by not caring about poverty, harm, and conflict." By these three, one benefits sentient beings, that is, just by these, other sentient beings will be fully matured.

. In terms of engaging in virtuous aspects, the antidote to afflictions is: diligence subdues afflictions and leads to joining the ranks of those who have completely destroyed afflictions, as has been explained. In terms of suppression, the antidote to afflictions is: meditation suppresses afflictions, as has been explained. In terms of completely destroying latent tendencies, the antidote to afflictions is: wisdom completely destroys latent tendencies, as has been explained. These three are the antidotes to afflictions, and by these alone, one's own Buddha-dharma will be fully matured. Summarizing the ultimate points, the meaning of being skilled in words, etc., has been explained. After that, the meaning of being skilled in companions, etc., will be explained, which is to be skilled in the four pāramitās. Therefore, it was asked, "For what reason, O Bhagavan, should other pāramitās be designated as four?" Because those six pāramitās themselves are companions, that is, skillful means are the companions of generosity, ethics, and patience; aspiration is the companion of diligence; strength is the companion of meditation; and wisdom is the companion of prajñā. Therefore, the number of companions should also be known as four, as has been explained. Among them, benefiting sentient beings with the three pāramitās means that by generosity, ethics, and patience, one accomplishes immediate benefit, does not create harm, and accepts the harm of others to benefit sentient beings. The bodhisattva establishes skillful means, which are encompassed by the four objects of gathering, in virtue, which shows that the body, speech, and mind activities of the bodhisattvas are completely encompassed by the four objects of gathering, which is skillful means. Thus, there are four methods for taming and gathering sentient beings: benefiting, causing to hold, causing to enter, and accomplishing harmony. Therefore, benefiting with generosity, one of the four objects of gathering, is skillful means. If one benefits with various material gifts, sentient beings will listen to their words.
