and to subdue those who should be subdued but are not yet subdued, to liberate those who should be liberated but are not yet liberated, and to lead to complete nirvana those who have not yet attained complete nirvana. Furthermore, the power of merit also transforms into three aspects: through the discipline of abstaining from non-virtue, one will be reborn in higher realms; through the discipline of engaging in virtue, one will perfect the accumulation of enlightenment; through the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, one will perfect the benefit of oneself and others. As for "patience being of three kinds," there are three kinds of patience that do not resent harm: even if scolded, one should not scold back; even if beaten, one should not strike back; even if slandered, one should not slander back. There are also three kinds of patience that do not mind suffering: patience that does not become weary of working for the benefit of all sentient beings in the future; patience that does not shrink back from suffering due to practicing supreme conduct; and patience in pacifying and abandoning afflictions such as desire. There are also three kinds of patience that ascertain the Dharma: not being afraid of emptiness; not clinging to the two extremes; and being steadfast in enduring difficult practices. Furthermore, the power of merit also transforms into three aspects: through the patience of not resenting harm, one will possess a complete retinue; through the patience of not minding suffering, one will abandon inferior thoughts; through the patience of ascertaining the Dharma, one will generate uncontaminated wisdom. As for "diligence being of three kinds," there are three kinds of armor-like diligence: donning the armor of great love; strengthening the power of great compassion; and strengthening the power of great diligence. There are also three kinds of diligence that engage in virtue: relying on the meaning with great faith; engaging in virtue with great conduct; and pervading sentient beings with great dedication. There are also three kinds of diligence that engage in benefiting sentient beings: striving without differentiating between equanimity and discipline; striving to establish the meaning of the Dharma through the four means of gathering; and striving with the wisdom that does not fear antidotes as a means. Furthermore, the power of merit also transforms into three aspects: the armor of dili-

Through diligence, the four maras are subdued. Through diligence in engaging in virtue, the ten bhumis are perfected. Through diligence in engaging in the benefit of sentient beings, one becomes endowed with the means of a great guide. The three meditations refer to: The meditation that does not conceptualize, is peaceful, and extremely peaceful, is the antidote to afflictions and suffering, and abides in bliss, is also of three types: the mind does not conceptualize the Dharma, the Dharma does not conceptualize the mind, and the mind of equanimity does not conceptualize either. The meditation that accomplishes qualities is also of three types: accomplishing the qualities of the body, accomplishing the qualities of wisdom, and accomplishing the qualities of power and so on. The qualities that accomplish the benefit of sentient beings are also of three types: the samadhi of dedication, the samadhi of pervasiveness, and the samadhi of immutability. Among them, the power of qualities also transforms into three types: Through the meditation that does not conceptualize, is peaceful, and extremely peaceful, is the antidote to afflictions and suffering, and abides in bliss, non-conceptualization is spontaneously accomplished. Through the meditation that accomplishes qualities, one obtains abundant causes. Through the meditation that accomplishes the benefit of sentient beings, one engages in the benefit of sentient beings with great compassion. The three wisdoms refer to: Focusing on the conventional truth is also of three types: being skilled in the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, being skilled in the continuum of samsara, and being skilled in turning away from the continuum of samsara. Focusing on the ultimate truth is also of three types: not abiding in emptiness, not conceptualizing in signlessness, and not clinging in wishlessness. Focusing on the benefit of sentient beings is of three types: engaging in the suffering of nature with samadhi, severing the suffering of action with antidotes, and wisdom that extensively explains the suffering of doubt. Among them, the power of qualities also transforms into three types: Through the wisdom that focuses on the conventional truth, one does not cling to samsara. Through the wisdom that focuses on the ultimate truth, one obtains the wisdom of the noble ones.
