One should always utter words such as "yes." Now, at the time of death, one should not utter harsh words that are completely provoked by anger. One should not openly or secretly revile or shout at beggars. Even if one does not possess things to give as charity, one should clean them well and give them away. One should not openly curse beggars, nor despise them, nor be disgusted by them, nor interrogate them. One should not cultivate slanderers. There are ten kinds of pure knowledge: pure knowledge based on giving, pure knowledge based on beggars, pure knowledge based on things to be given as charity, pure knowledge based on the act of giving, pure knowledge based on completely maturing sentient beings through giving, pure knowledge based on skillful means, pure knowledge based on the faults of desires, pure knowledge based on eliminating defilements, pure knowledge based on completely abandoning evil friends and completely relying on virtuous friends, and pure knowledge based on the covering of the six directions themselves. There are ten kinds of pure defilements: when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of laziness; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of attachment; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of hatred; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of ignorance; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of stinginess; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of unreasonableness; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of incompleteness; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of impurity; when giving, one gives with a giving that is free from the defilement of perverted wisdom; when giving, one gives in order to be free from the defilement of non-skillful means. After that, there are seven kinds of pure morality, namely: by being skilled in all aspects of the training grounds that are included in the Bodhisattva vows, one is a Bo-

It is called "all precepts," and it has two aspects: belonging to the side of householders and belonging to the side of renunciants. Moreover, according to circumstances, there are three types: the precept of discipline, the precept of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the precept of benefiting sentient beings. These three precepts also have three functions: the precept of discipline stabilizes the mind, the precept of gathering virtuous dharmas perfects the Buddha's teachings for oneself, and the precept of benefiting sentient beings perfects sentient beings. All the activities of a Bodhisattva are like this: to stabilize the mind for the sake of being happy in this life, to perfect the Buddha's teachings without tiring the body and mind, and to perfect sentient beings—that is all. The precepts are limited to these, and the benefits of the precepts are also limited to these. All Bodhisattvas of the three times who desire great Bodhi learn these, and when they manifest enlightenment of unsurpassed Bodhi, it is also called all precepts, and also called the basis of all learning. In this regard, the expert is the one who is pure in precepts. What is called being skilled in recovering from downfalls is being skilled in recovering from downfalls through three causes. What are these three? They are generating five regrets, being mindful gathered by five limbs, and eliminating regrets in five ways. Among these, what is generating five regrets? When any downfall occurs, one generates regret thinking that one will be blamed by those who are pure in precepts because of this basis; one generates regret thinking that one will be blamed by others and the gods; one generates regret thinking that one will be blamed by the teachers who practice like Brahma and the wise ones; one generates regret thinking that in all directions and intermediate directions, the fame of praise, sounds, and verses of the wicked will manifestly increase; one generates regret thinking that after one's body is destroyed, one will fall into bad destinies and bad migrations, and if one is born in them, it will be unbearable. What is gathered by five limbs?
