Therefore, it shows all the afflictions. How is it to be understood by complete purification? Pure meditation is called complete purification for the sake of virtue, therefore, it shows complete purification. How is it to be understood by separate establishment? It is of four kinds, namely number and incompatible aspects, as well as limb separate establishment, equipoise separate establishment, measure separate establishment, and designation of names separate establishment. Among them, number separate establishment, why are there only four meditations, neither too many nor too few? Because it has completely transcended happiness and suffering, like this, from the first meditation to the gradual fourth meditation, it has completely transcended happiness and suffering. Incompatible aspects separate establishment, what are the incompatible aspects of the first meditation? There are five, namely desire for sensual pleasures and malice, as well as disturbing thoughts of harm, displeasure and immoral precepts, and distraction. What are the incompatible aspects of the second meditation? There are also five, namely desire for the first meditation, investigation and analysis, suffering, excitement, and incomplete samadhi. What are the incompatible aspects of the third meditation? There are four, namely desire for the second meditation, pleasantness, joy, and incomplete samadhi. What are the incompatible aspects of the fourth meditation? There are also five, namely inhalation and exhalation, as well as desire for the third meditation, happiness, etc., and incomplete samadhi. Limb separate establishment, what are the limbs of the first meditation? There are five, namely investigation, analysis, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. What are the limbs of the second meditation? There are four, namely inner complete clarity, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. What are the limbs of the third meditation? There are also five, namely mindfulness, awareness, equanimity, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. What are the limbs of the fourth meditation?

Purity, and neither suffering nor happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. Why are these four meditations established as having five branches and four branches? Because they are the support of abiding, beneficial to abiding, and the very nature of abiding. Among them, from the five branches of the first meditation, investigation and analysis; from the four branches of the second meditation, inner clarity; from the five branches of the third meditation, mindfulness and awareness and equanimity; from the four branches of the fourth meditation, pure equanimity and pure mindfulness are the support of abiding for each of the four meditations. The joy and happiness of the first meditation, the joy and happiness of the second meditation, the happiness of the third meditation, and the neither suffering nor happiness of the fourth meditation are each beneficial to abiding. The four one-pointednesses of mind in the four meditations should be understood as the very nature of their respective abiding. Other

The method of dividing into three should be understood as before. The establishment of equipoise is that the dhyanas are brought into equipoise by the seven mental activities, namely, the mental activity of individually knowing the characteristics, the mental activity arising from faith, the mental activity of complete solitude, the mental activity of investigation, the mental activity of gathering joy, the mental activity of ultimate application, and the mental activity of the fruit of ultimate application. How, then, does one enter into equipoise with the first dhyana by means of the seven mental activities? The mental activity of the earth of equipoise, which individually distinguishes the coarse characteristics of desires and the peaceful characteristics of the first dhyana, is the mental activity of individually knowing its characteristics, and it should be understood that it is mixed with attainment. In this way, after individually distinguishing the coarse characteristics of desires and the peaceful characteristics of the first dhyana, he believes in the manner of practicing alone, having truly transcended hearing and thinking about the nature of the complete search and coarse peace of the first dhyana, and he practices calm abiding and insight that focus on that characteristic itself. Because he practices, how does he completely search and coarsen? The nature of those peaceful things becomes peaceful again and again, and that is his mental activity arising from faith. By repeatedly relying on and practicing them, and by repeatedly practicing them, the path of abandoning great afflictions arises only at the beginning, and the mental activity associated with that path is called the mental activity of complete solitude. He first abandons the afflictions that arise in desire, and because he is separated from the evil destinies of that category, he then rejoices in abandonment and rejoices in solitude, and sees the benefits of abandoning it, and touches the joy and small pleasure arising from solitude, like this. In order to abandon drowsiness, sleep, and agitation, he truly rejoices with a mental activity that becomes extremely joyful from time to time, and he makes everything weary with a mental activity that makes everything weary, that is
