Eliminating, clearing, and purifying, and also making the mind equanimous, therefore it is said to be with mindfulness and awareness. Experiencing pleasure with the body means that at that time, the pleasure of the physical body and the pleasure of the mental body, as well as the pleasure of extreme suppleness, are experienced separately, therefore it is said to experience pleasure with the body. The noble ones say that this person is mindful, dwells in pleasure, and is equanimous, which means that the dhyanas below the third dhyana do not have such pleasure, and the dhyanas above the third dhyana, although they have equanimity, do not have such pleasure. Thus, because the lower dhyanas have pleasure and equanimity, and the upper dhyanas do not have pleasure, the third dhyana is their place, so the noble ones also abide by it as the object of focus, and take the person who abides in it as the object, saying that this person is mindful, dwells in pleasure, and is equanimous. The noble ones refer to the Buddha and the Buddha's Shravaka disciples. Without joy means that abiding in equanimity in this way, at that time, mindfulness and awareness, completely relying on and becoming familiar with, due to repeated practice, abandoning the feeling corresponding to joy, making the mind joyful, and the antidote to joy, without joy, the feeling of peace and extreme peace, the mind arises, therefore it is said to be without joy. Practicing and abiding in the third dhyana should be understood as before. From the chapter on the fourth dhyana, because that pleasure is also a similar antidote, the antidote to abandonment is not shown, but it is shown what is done by its antidote, how the abandonment of pleasure is. What is its antidote? It's like this, equanimity and mindfulness and awareness. Relying on it and becoming familiar with it, practicing it many times, generating the karma of the third dhyana, and abandoning the pleasure of the ground of the third dhyana, therefore it is said to abandon that pleasure. Having previously abandoned suffering, and also the pleasant and unpleasant mental states have ceased, means that at that time, the meditator completely from pleasure and suffering

Because the past that has been attained gathers together what was previously abandoned and what is now being abandoned, therefore, it is said that suffering has also been abandoned previously, and joy and displeasure have also ceased. Among them, when entering the fourth dhyana, pleasure is abandoned. When entering the second dhyana, suffering is abandoned. When entering the third dhyana, joy ceases. When entering the first dhyana, displeasure ceases. The so-called neither pleasure nor pain is because he temporarily abandons pleasure and pain, so for him, the remaining feeling is neither pleasure nor pain, it only exists temporarily, so it is said neither pleasure nor pain. The so-called equanimity and pure mindfulness is because at that time he abandoned the faults of the lower levels above the first dhyana, such as: all investigation, analysis, joy, inhalation and exhalation have been abandoned. After abandoning those, the equanimity and mindfulness he possesses become completely pure and completely purified. Therefore, the person who enters the fourth dhyana, his mind abides unmoving and is free from all movement, so it is said that equanimity and mindfulness are completely pure. The so-called practicing and abiding in the fourth dhyana should be understood as before. Those four dhyanas should be understood in four ways: defilement, purification, establishment, and purity. Among them, how to understand with defilement? The four unstated roots are desire, view, pride, and ignorance. Desire is the defilement of defilement. View is defiled by the meditator who is mainly view. Pride is defiled by the meditator who is mainly pride. Ignorance is defiled by the meditation that is mainly doubt. Thus, when the mind is defiled, defilements and near defilements that walk in the realm of form arise.
