O! The name "meditation" is because it properly applies to the object of focus and desires single-pointedness of mind, hence it is called meditation. The name "first" is because it starts from the initial desire realm and counts according to the order, hence it is called first. The name "accomplished" is because it is the result of the ultimate application, hence it is called accomplished. The name "abides" is because it eliminates external opponents, accomplishes many times, obtains as desired, obtains without difficulty, and obtains without hardship, therefore, with the samadhi of meditation, one can pass through the night and day, or seven days, or as long as possible, hence it is said "abides." Starting from the chapter on the second meditation, the name "it is free from investigation and analysis, and the interior is completely clear" means that from the characteristics of samadhi with investigation and analysis, the mind completely transforms and skillfully dwells in the characteristics of samadhi without investigation and analysis, separating from the observation of impermanence of the object of focus, with the firm observation of the object of focus, with a single mind making it peaceful, clear, and causing it to abide, therefore, it is said "it is free from investigation and analysis, and the interior is completely clear." The name "the continuum of mind becomes one" is to make that meditation practice pure, completely transcending from the interrupted state of interruption by investigation and analysis, obtaining a state without interruption and interruption, therefore it is said "the continuum becomes one." The name "without investigation and without analysis" is to completely cut off all kinds of investigation and analysis, hence it is said "without investigation and without analysis." The name "born from samadhi" is born from the samadhi of attention of the ultimate application. "Born" refers to the fact that from that cause and that condition, it only truly arises immediately after that, therefore it is said "born from samadhi." The name "having joy and happiness" refers to obtaining the meaning of desire and happiness, and not regarding joy as a fault.

Because where there is great joy and ease, and because all the evils of the first dhyana's searching, examination, and afflictions have been eliminated, as a remedy for this, the mind and body have been greatly tamed and have the joy of being able to be happy, so it is called having joy and ease. The so-called practice of the second dhyana and dwelling, the word "two" is counted in order. All the rest should be understood as before. From the stage of the third dhyana, it is said that "because he has detached himself from the attachment to joy", this is because the characteristics of joy are regarded as faults. Therefore, it is said that "he has detached himself from the attachment to joy". The so-called "dwelling in equanimity" refers to when the mind is focused on the third dhyana without joy, there are two kinds of faults that completely distract the mind. Because the second dhyana has been separated from searching, examination, and the present joy, it is said that "dwelling in equanimity". These two dharmas that completely distract the mind will hinder the mind from continuously dwelling in equanimity, so it is called completely distracting the mind. For the first dhyana, because there is searching and examination, it will not continuously enter into equanimity. For the second dhyana, because there is joy, it will not continuously enter into equanimity there either. Therefore, the first dhyana and the second dhyana do not have much equanimity. Therefore, the meditator who enters the third dhyana is called dwelling in equanimity. The so-called "having mindfulness and awareness" means that when dwelling in equanimity, no matter what, the thought of remembering and being happy will not arise, so it will not dwell in mindfulness. If the third dhyana has not been well practiced, because of forgetfulness, the thought of remembering and being happy often arises, then one should quickly use wisdom to distinguish them one by one, understand them well and completely, and abandon them without accepting any arising thoughts.
