And like the incomparable and the focused, and the formless, one should also recognize that there exists the object in which the mind abides. What are the four dhyanas? They are: having become separated from desires, separated from sinful, unwholesome dharmas, possessing discernment and investigation, having joy and bliss born of separation, one dwells having accomplished the first dhyana, this is called the first dhyana. Secondly, having become separated from discernment and investigation, the inside is completely pacified, the stream of mind becomes one, without discernment, without investigation, having joy and bliss born of samadhi, one dwells having accomplished the second dhyana, this is called the second dhyana. Thirdly, having become separated from attachment to joy, one dwells in equanimity, being mindful and possessing awareness, experiencing bliss with the body, that which is spoken of by the noble ones as possessing mindfulness, dwelling in bliss, being in equanimity, is the joyless third dhyana, one dwells having accomplished the third dhyana, this is called the third dhyana. Fourthly, having abandoned bliss, and having previously abandoned suffering as well, and also having the power over mental ease and mental unease, being neither bliss nor suffering, equanimity and mindfulness being completely purified, one dwells having accomplished the fourth dhyana, this is called the fourth dhyana. Among these, in the context of the first dhyana, "desires" are of two types: afflictive desires and material desires. "Separated from desires" is also of two types: separation in association and separation in object. "Separated from sinful, unwholesome dharmas" refers to the proximate afflictions and unwholesome dharmas arising from the cause of desire, such as: misconduct of the body, misconduct of speech, misconduct of mind, wielding weapons, taking possessions, fighting and exposing faults, arguing, quarreling, deceiving, seducing, being without compassion, speaking falsely, and whatever arises from all of these. In order to abandon these, it is said, "separated from sinful, unwholesome dharmas." So, why is it said first, "separated from desires," and then, "separated from sinful, unwholesome dharmas?" This is to show the self-nature of desires, therefore it is said, "desires." And the faults of desires

In order to show the characteristics of the object, it is said, "sins, non-virtuous dharmas." Among them, the characteristic of sin is: because it arises from acting wrongly on the faults of desires and causes one to fall, it is a sin. Because it is incompatible with the arising of virtue, it is non-virtuous. Furthermore, in order to fully show the abandonment of the pervasive afflictions of the afflictions, and in order to fully show the abandonment of the pervasive afflictions of previously accumulated karma, it is said, "separated from desires, separated from sins, non-virtuous dharmas." Furthermore, in order to fully show the hatred of desires through the way householders fully enjoy things, and in order to fully show the abandonment of it through the conceptualization of renunciants, it is said, "separated from desires, separated from sins, non-virtuous dharmas." Furthermore, in order to fully show the abandonment of the conceptualization of desires, and in order to fully show the abandonment of the conceptualization of harmful intent and malice, it is said, "separated from desires, separated from sins, non-virtuous dharmas." Furthermore, in order to clearly show the signs of outer ascetics obtaining samsara, and in order to fully show the abandonment of the curses of those who have completely fallen from meditation, it is said, "desires and sins, non-virtuous dharmas." The so-called "with investigation and analysis" is because investigation and analysis are not regarded as faults. Because, by way of counteracting desires, one possesses the virtuous dharmas of investigation and analysis of one's own ground, it is said, "with investigation and analysis." The so-called "born from separation" is born from the ultimate yoga mental engagement that is separated from desires. The so-called "born" means that it is produced truly only after that, by that cause and that condition, therefore it is said, "born from separation." The so-called "having joy and bliss" is because one obtains the meaning of desires and hopes, and does not regard joy as a fault, and is separated from all bad migrations, and possesses great fitness of body and mind, therefore it is said, "having joy and bliss."
