I, through the means of faults and antidotes, will certainly realize only goodness, and will place mindfulness in a single focus, and will abide in it many times, in the manner of distancing all afflictions, the single-pointedness of mind will arise, however, whatever does not completely destroy the latent tendencies of sinful and non-virtuous dharmas, that is called the samadhi made by the power of diligence. What is the samadhi made by the power of mind? It is to strongly hold the sinking mind, to strongly grasp the mind and enter into samadhi, and to especially abandon it from time to time, and for the dharmas that are in accordance with sinful and non-virtuous dharmas, and the dharmas of virtue and non-virtue, and the dharmas that are in accordance with virtue and non-virtue, from the perspective of self-nature, basis, faults, benefits, antidotes, and definite liberation, one will certainly realize only goodness, and will place mindfulness in a single focus, and will abide in it many times, in the manner of distancing all causes of affliction, the single-pointedness of mind will arise, however, whatever does not completely destroy the latent tendencies of sinful and non-virtuous dharmas, that is called the samadhi made by the power of mind. What is the samadhi made by the power of examination? That is, whatever dharmas are in accordance with sinful and non-virtuous dharmas of inappropriate attention, those themselves are the dharmas that are in accordance with virtuous dharmas of appropriate attention, therefore, like that, distancing all afflictions, and since those sinful and non-virtuous dharmas do not universally arise for those who have generated virtuous dharmas such as the antidote samadhi of all afflictions, therefore he thinks like this: Are sinful and non-virtuous dharmas existent, and not non-existent, and not experienced? Or are those that are non-existent, and not existent, and not experienced, to be completely examined, thinking like this, that is made by the power of examining attention, examining what has been abandoned and what has not been abandoned, thereby certainly realizing only goodness, and placing mindfulness in a single focus, and

Therefore, by dwelling in it repeatedly, one will touch single-pointedness of mind. Therefore, what I say is, "The mind is merely liberated from all entanglements, but not from all habitual tendencies," and "I merely obtain and cultivate the antidotes to these entanglements, such as samadhi and other virtuous dharmas, but not the antidotes to habitual tendencies." Those who truly know these things as they are and are without pride are called samadhi that is dominated by their discernment. Regarding these four types of samadhi, if one can distance all entanglements, one can completely destroy the habitual tendencies of all sinful and unwholesome dharmas, and in order to truly accomplish their antidotes—virtuous dharmas—one generates vast aspiration, strives, initiates diligence, and exerts effort through the four right abandonments. By exerting effort in this way and acting in this way, eight abandoning dharma mental activities will arise. Through them, one can truly destroy habitual tendencies, perfect samadhi, and make the mind workable. What are the eight abandoning dharma mental activities? They are: aspiration, effort, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, mind, and equanimity. Among them, aspiration is thinking, "When will my samadhi be perfected, and when will I abandon the habitual tendencies of sinful and unwholesome dharmas?" Effort is not abandoning the application of cultivating the antidote. Faith is believing and completely trusting in the dharma to be realized on the basis of not abandoning the application. Pliancy is extreme joy and joy preceded by faith and delight, and through the sequence of making the mind joyful, abandoning and purifying the bad circumstances of the sinful and unwholesome dharmas.

What are the six distinctions of relinquishment? Mind is the manifestation of mind, which is the manifestation of mind that discerns what has been abandoned and what has not been abandoned, and which, in accordance with calm abiding and insight, initiates all physical and verbal actions. Equanimity is the mind that discerns sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have occurred in the past, future, and present, without any afflictions and making the mind equal. These eight acts of abandonment are the four applications that completely destroy latent tendencies: desire, diligence, faith, and means. Among them, desire is the application of desire, diligence is the application of diligence, faith is the application of faith, and pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, mind, and equanimity are the application of means. These eight acts of abandonment can also be summarized into four branches: the branch of meditation, the branch of special affliction, the branch of guarding against near afflictions and realizing them, and the branch of gathering for the sake of purifying near afflictions. Among them, the branch of meditation is desire and diligence, because by relying on desire and diligence, one cultivates the foundations of miraculous powers. The branch of special realization is faith and pliancy, because by relying on faith, one realizes the special qualities and generates faith in the higher liberations, and by relying on pliancy, one thoroughly subdues the unwholesome states of body and mind. The branch of guarding against near afflictions and realizing them is mindfulness and awareness, because by relying on mindfulness, one guards against the near afflictions of calm abiding and insight that have not yet arisen, and by relying on awareness, one realizes those that have arisen. The branch of gathering for the sake of purifying near afflictions is mind and equanimity, because mind holds onto the shrinking mind, and equanimity gathers the scattering inwards. These eight acts of abandonment are practiced in order to abandon the five faults.
