That is called the attention that gathers its joy. Like this, when one correctly strives on the joy of abandonment and the joy of meditation, whether it is the cause or the place, for it, when the afflictions that are associated with the desire to hinder the joining of the mind with virtue do not arise, he thinks like this: Am I not experiencing desire for desires? Or am I not experiencing it because it is not there? He thinks like this, because he wants to fully discern, so he takes to mind any sign that can cause extreme conviction, and in order to completely abandon all of its latent tendencies, when he attends to that sign, a mind that inclines towards reliance, submission, and having submitted arises, and does not abide in equanimity, and does not abide in aversion, hatred, and turning back, and disharmony, he thinks like this: My mind is like this, it is not truly free from attachment and liberated from desires. Then, in order to extensively abandon the remaining part of that latent tendency, my mind is seized by manifest fabrication, squeezed like water, and seized by the nature of reality, he should dwell extensively in what is joyful in abandoning and what is joyful in meditating, this is called its discerning attention. Like this, when abiding extensively in the joy of abandonment and the joy of meditation, and striving to cultivate calm abiding and insight, he repeatedly discerns, and cultivates its antidote, discerning at each moment both what has been abandoned and what has not been abandoned, he temporarily separates the mind in some way from all the afflictions that act in desire, but does not completely destroy the seed, and at that time, the ultimate of the path that joins with the first dhyana arises, the attention that becomes the antidote to all afflictions, this is called the ultimate attention of its purification. Immediately following that, solely by that cause and that condition, one enters into the actual practice of the first dhyana, and the attention that corresponds to the actual practice of dhyana arises, this is called the attention of the ultimate fruit of its union.

When the mental activity of extreme solitude and the mental activity of gathering joy arise, the joy and happiness born of solitude will fill the whole body. When the mental activity of ultimate union arises, sometimes it pervades in the form of a small object of happiness. Sometimes it pervades in the form of a very large and very extensive object of happiness. When the mental activity of the fruit of ultimate union arises, it is like this: the whole body is filled with joy and happiness born of solitude, and there is nothing that is not filled. At that time, it is called being separated from desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, having joy and happiness born of solitude, abiding having accomplished the five branches of the first dhyana. Abiding in the fruit of cultivating the antidote path that acts in the realm of desire, and obtaining freedom from attachment to all desires. Just as one enters the first dhyana with seven mental activities, so also one should understand that one enters the second, third, and fourth dhyanas and the formless realms with seven mental activities as appropriate. Among them, the mental activity of knowing each characteristic also fully knows what should be abandoned and also fully knows what should be attained, and also directs the mind to abandon what should be abandoned and to attain what should be attained. The mental activity arising from aspiration is to diligently practice in order to abandon what should be abandoned and to attain what should be attained. The mental activity of extreme solitude abandons great afflictions. The mental activity of gathering joy abandons intermediate forms of afflictions. The mental activity of analysis makes the mind abide because there is no pride in what has been attained. The mental activity of ultimate union abandons small forms of afflictions. The mental activity of the fruit of ultimate union experiences the result of cultivating those mental activities.
