Just by that, the mind can be closely directed towards the object, eliminating gross inversions, entering the Four Noble Truths, and knowing the opposing aspects and antidotes in every way. The four right abandonments are indicated by "those things" and so on, which indicate the path arising from effort. So, what are the four right abandonments? In order not to generate unwholesome and unwholesome dharmas that have not arisen, and in order to abandon unwholesome and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, one generates desire, exerts effort, initiates diligence, and thoroughly grasps the mind and abides in it. In order to generate wholesome dharmas that have not arisen, and in order to maintain wholesome dharmas that have arisen, not to forget, and to perfect cultivation, one generates desire, exerts effort, initiates diligence, and thoroughly grasps the mind and abides in it. So, what is the order? In that way, having fully practiced the four mindfulnesses, eliminating gross inversions, and fully understanding the opposing aspects and antidotal dharmas, one should keep the mind on that object, and in order to eliminate the opposing aspects and generate the antidote, one should know to strive with the four right abandonments. So, the four right efforts should also be understood by means of the object, the nature, the companion, the cultivation, and the fruit of cultivation. So, what is the object? The opposing aspects and the antidote, arisen and not arisen. What is the nature? It is diligence. What is the companion? It is the mind and mental dharmas that are in accordance with it. What is the cultivation? One generates desire, exerts effort, initiates diligence, and thoroughly grasps the mind and abides in it. What is the fruit of cultivation? The complete cessation of the opposing aspects, and the attainment of the antidote. So, what are the sinful and unwholesome dharmas? What is unarisen? What is arisen? The so-called sinful and unwholesome dharmas are the afflictive actions of body, speech, and mind that operate in the desire realm, that is, acting wrongly with body, speech, and mind.

What are the differences? And what are the afflictions that give rise to those differences? What are those that have not arisen? Those that have not been encountered and have not manifested. What are those that have arisen? Those that have been encountered and have manifested. Furthermore, for the mind that is closely focused on the object of suchness, all appearances that have become signs and bad states, and those that have not yet truly arisen internally, are called unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas. The opposite of that is called arisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas. What is the aspiration to generate in order not to generate the unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas? What is the aspiration to generate in order to abandon the arisen ones? When the unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas do not arise from the beginning, and therefore joy arises, wishes are made, and one is unwilling to accept them, that is the aspiration not to generate the unarisen ones. What is it that does not accept the arisen ones and abandons them? That is the aspiration to abandon the arisen ones. What is the effort to not generate the unarisen ones and to abandon the arisen ones? What is the exertion of diligence? Those sinful and unwholesome dharmas also arise in dependence on past, future, and present objects. Those that arise in dependence on past and future objects are dependent on hidden objects. Those that depend on present objects depend on manifest objects. Therefore, effort is made not to generate the unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas that depend on hidden objects, and to abandon the arisen ones. Diligence is exerted not to generate the unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas that depend on manifest objects, and to abandon the arisen ones. Furthermore, effort is made not to generate small and medium secondary afflictions, and to abandon the arisen secondary afflictions. In order not to generate great secondary afflictions, and the arisen

Because of abandoning them, one initiates diligence. Furthermore, which sinful, unwholesome dharmas arise solely from the power of universal discrimination and not from the power of objects? For example, when abiding, those (sinful, unwholesome dharmas) that arise upon the objects of the past and future, for those that have not yet arisen, one does not cause them to arise; for those that have already arisen, in order to abandon them, one strives. Which sinful, unwholesome dharmas also arise from the power of universal discrimination and the power of objects? For example, when moving, those (sinful, unwholesome dharmas) that arise from the objects that appear in the present, for those that have not yet arisen, one does not cause them to arise; for those that have already arisen, in order to abandon them, one initiates diligence. Therefore, for those sinful, unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, one does not cause them to arise; for those that have already arisen, in order to abandon them, one generates aspiration, strives, and initiates diligence. What is it to fully grasp the mind? What is it to fully establish? If, when one does not cause sinful, unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen to arise, and in order to abandon those that have already arisen, one generates aspiration, strives, and initiates diligence, and when one cultivates shamatha single-mindedly, if, when gathering inward, one sees dullness or doubts dullness, at that time, with any sign of grasping or obstacle, one grasps and rejoices, that is to fully grasp the mind. Like this, when fully grasping, if one sees that the mind is agitated or doubts agitation, at that time, one manifests gathering inward, and fully establishes shamatha, that is to fully establish. Then, what are the virtuous dharmas? Which are those that have not yet arisen? Which are those that have already arisen? The so-called virtuous dharmas are those dharmas that become the antidote to those sinful, unwholesome dharmas, that is, those that become the antidote to misconduct, the antidote to obscurations, and the antidote to universal connections. Which are those that have not yet arisen? Those that have not yet been encountered and have not yet manifested. Which are those that have already arisen? Those that have already been encountered and have already manifested. Furthermore, with such an object of reality
