Observing those feelings, mind, and dharmas that arise, this is dwelling in the contemplation of dharmas on internal and external feelings, mind, and dharmas. Another case is, if one observes the form that is touched by the senses, this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the internal body. If one observes the form that is not touched by the senses, not already touched but about to be touched, this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the external body. If it is only not touched by the senses, and one observes the internal form that has been touched and will be touched, this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the internal and external body. Similarly, relying on these three forms, for the feelings, mind, and dharmas that arise, observing according to the circumstances, just as before, it should be understood that this is dwelling in contemplation. Another case is, if one observes the form of the samatha ground that is completely subdued and possessed of samatha, this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the internal body. If one observes the internal, merely one's own, not of the samatha ground, possessed of faults, this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the external body. If one observes the form of others, completely subdued and possessed of faults, this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the internal and external body. Similarly, for the feelings, mind, and dharmas that arise relying on these, they should also be combined according to the circumstances. Another case is, when one observes the internal body with consciousness, this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the internal body. If one observes the form that is considered a sentient being, without consciousness, in a state of being abandoned, etc., this is dwelling in the contemplation of the body on the external body. If one observes the form without consciousness that had consciousness in the past, and the form with consciousness that becomes without consciousness in the future, then this similarity of dharma and equality of dharma, and the object of observation, are internal and external.

Thus, one dwells contemplating the body in the body internally. Likewise, feelings, mind, and phenomena that arise dependent on them should also be applied accordingly. Furthermore, focusing on aspects such as one's own hair, body hair, nails, etc., is dwelling contemplating the body in the body internally. Focusing on aspects such as hair, body hair, nails, etc., in the internal body of others is dwelling contemplating the body in the body externally. Focusing on the nature being the same, whether one's own external body is decaying with aspects such as putrefaction, or the external body of others is decaying or not decaying with aspects such as putrefaction, is dwelling contemplating the body in the body internally and externally. Feelings and phenomena that arise dependent on them should also be applied accordingly in the same way. What is the meaning of "mindfulness"? That which one establishes mindfulness upon, and that by which one establishes mindfulness, is called "mindfulness." What does one establish mindfulness upon? Upon the object of focus. By what does one establish mindfulness? By the wisdom of contemplation and the mindfulness that correctly gathers samadhi. Moreover, whatever wholesome path with outflows or without outflows arises correctly by the power of body, feelings, mind, and phenomena is mindfulness. It is also divided into arising from hearing, arising from thinking, and arising from meditation. Among these, what arises from hearing and thinking is only with outflows. What arises from meditation also has outflows and also has no outflows; that is meditation. What is dwelling? It is abandoning the four perversions, entering the four truths, and dwelling apart from the body, etc., at the time of obtaining attention; that is the fruit of meditation. Thus, these four mindfulnesses are the path of fully understanding things, so therefore it is called the object of close engagement.
