Not being born in Akanistha, but due to the power of prior habituation, alternately meditating on the respective positions of ordinary beings of the four dhyanas and the pure abodes with outflows and without outflows. What does it refer to when one dies from the Brahma host and is not born in an impure place, but is born in the surpassing Akanistha? What is meant by "half-leap" is that one dies from the Brahma host and is born in any of the first, second, third, or fourth of the five pure abodes, and then dies from there and is born in Akanistha. What does it refer to? What is meant by "dying and transmigrating in all places" is that one gradually develops and alternately cultivates all of the second, third, and fourth dhyanas, and from the Brahma host to Akanistha, one is born and dies in all places except for the Great Brahma, and finally is born in Akanistha. What does it refer to? Noble ones are not born in the Great Brahma, because it is a place of observation and because it is exhausted into a single chief. What is meant by "alternating dhyana" is to cultivate the fourth dhyana alternately, because that dhyana is the most excellent among all feasible and easily attainable paths of superknowledge. How is it cultivated alternately? Whether it is an Arhat or a Non-returner, first, one abides in the continuous possession of the four dhyanas without outflows, and rising from that, one abides for a long time in the continuous possession of the same fourth dhyana with outflows, and rising from that, one again abides for a long time in the continuous possession of the same fourth dhyana without outflows. In this way, in the process of abiding, gradually reducing the duration of the continuum, when one abides in two moments without outflows, and rising from that, one abides in two moments with outflows, and rising from that, one again abides in two moments without outflows. Alternately cultivating one moment without outflows and one moment with outflows cannot be done by anyone other than the Buddha, the Bhagavan. Therefore, Arhats and Non-returners, having continuously cultivated from a long time, finally complete the abiding in the state of alternately cultivating two moments. This is how it should be understood. Among the three continuums, the first two

The earth is like an unobstructed path, and the third is like the path of liberation. Because of whatever is defiled, they are born into those realms. So, what is it to ascend without cultivating meditation, up to the peak of existence? It refers to those born in the Brahma host, who experience the samadhi of the third dhyana of each of the first dhyana to the second, third, and fourth dhyanas, and are born in all those places. Without entering the Pure Abodes, they gradually ascend to the Formless Realm, reaching the peak of existence and completely passing beyond sorrow. This is the practice of tranquility. The former is the practice of insight. Those who ascend should also be seen as capable of completely passing beyond sorrow in those places. The ultimate end of Akanistha and the peak of existence is that there is no further place to go. For example, like a stream-enterer, if obstructed, it is like the seventh existence, which is temporarily approaching the Form Realm, the five Never-Returners. The sutra says, "The noble person's going is seven." This refers to the three who completely pass beyond sorrow in the intermediate state, and the three who completely pass beyond sorrow after birth, which are combined as one without distinguishing those who ascend. What is called approaching the Formless Realm is that the Never-Returner is free from desire for form, and dies from this desire realm and is born into the Formless Realm. This is also the difference between the five who approach the Form Realm, except for the four who completely pass beyond sorrow in the intermediate state. What is called completely passing beyond sorrow in this life is that the Never-Returner completely passes beyond sorrow in this life in the desire realm, and is not born in the two upper realms. Although this is not any of the five who approach the Form Realm and the four who approach the Formless Realm, it is nevertheless passing beyond sorrow with and without exertion. Among those Never-Returners, whoever attains the samadhi of cessation, that is manifested by the Dharmakaya similar to Nirvana, therefore it is called body witness.
