, and to abide in well-advised and subsequent teachings, and to become one whose body, speech, and mind are engaged in skillful means. How can one increase faith and understanding? Bodhisattvas have eight objects of faith and understanding: the supreme object, the vast object, the profound object, the object of reasoning about causes, the object of reasoning about effects, the object to be realized, the object to be cultivated, and the object to be spoken about. Also, the qualities of the Three Jewels, the power of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, the meaning of that alone, abiding on the path, attaining the fruit, the unsurpassed Bodhi and the Bodhisattva's training, and the well-spoken Dharma Sutras, etc., Bodhisattvas, with faith in the realm of faith and understanding, believe that they can attain the Dharma of the Buddhas, and thus greatly differentiate, thereby increasing faith and understanding. How should one seek the Dharma? What does a Bodhisattva seeker seek? How does he seek? Why does he seek? In short, a Bodhisattva seeks the Bodhisattva Pitaka, the Hearer Pitaka, the treatises of outsiders, worldly crafts, and the five sciences included in the knowledge of crafts, namely, inner science, medical science, logic, grammar, and the science of crafts and occupations. How does he seek? In short, a Bodhisattva seeks the Dharma in three ways: with great reverence and closeness, with perfect conduct, and with perfect listening. Why does he seek? In short, a Bodhisattva seeks these five sciences in order to perfect the great accumulation of wisdom of unsurpassed Bodhi. How should one teach the Dharma? What does a Bodhisattva teacher teach? How does he teach? Why does he teach? He teaches what he has sought. Why does he seek, and for that reason he speaks. How does he speak? He speaks in two ways: by speaking in accordance with the Dharma and by speaking with complete purity. How should one practice the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma? In short, it should be understood in five ways:

E! How to seek and how to uphold the Dharma, that is, to follow with body, speech, and mind, to think well, to meditate well, and to completely abandon those Dharmas that the Bhagavan does not allow to be practiced with body, speech, and mind, and to rely on those that are allowed to be practiced with body, speech, and mind. How to skillfully advise and subsequently instruct? Advice, in brief, should be understood as eightfold. Bodhisattvas and Tathagatas, for those to be tamed, first seek their minds and know them. Having sought their minds, they seek their faculties and know them. Having sought their minds, they seek their faculties and know them. Having sought their faculties, they seek their intentions and know them. Having sought their intentions, they seek their latent tendencies and know them. Having sought their latent tendencies, they introduce them to the objects of practice that purify the doors of entry according to their respective capacities. Having introduced them to the doors of entry according to their respective capacities, they teach the Middle Way as an antidote to the clinging to permanence that has not been well grasped. Then, they teach the Middle Way as an antidote to the extreme of clinging to difference that has not been well grasped. Then, they cause them to abandon the pride of thinking, "I shall directly realize" what has not been done, not been attained, not been touched, and not been directly comprehended. These eight kinds of advice, in brief, should be understood as being summarized by three places. In order to make the mind that does not abide, abide, the first is the place of giving well to the object; in order to make the mind that abides, attain its own meaning, it is the place of truly showing the path of means; and in order to make the attainment of one's own meaning ultimately complete, it is the place of causing one to abandon the intermediate state. Among them, the first five advices are summarized in the first place, the middle two are summarized in the second place, and the last one should be understood as being summarized in the third place. What is the subsequent instruction? It should be understood as fivefold, namely, prohibiting all actions that involve faults, allowing all actions that are without faults, encouraging practice without confusing the Dharmas of prohibition and allowance, and repeatedly being respectful, without confusion, without discord, and rebuking with a gentle mind.
