Invoking the Sangha Jewel, combine them sequentially. The term "twenty-nine" indicates the collection of phenomena related to both defilement and purification. The term "depending on" is synonymous with relying on them. That is, sometimes it relies on one thing, sometimes on two things, and sometimes on many things, combining with all Sutras and in any appropriate way. The term "of all dharmas" refers to the distinctions of all defiled and purified dharmas that hold their own and common characteristics, such as: those with form and those without form, those that are visible and those that are invisible, those that are obstructive and those that are unobstructed, those that are invisible and unobstructed, and those that are visible and obstructive, those with outflows and those without outflows, those with afflictions and those without afflictions, those with taints and those without taints, those that depend on attachment and those that depend on manifestation, those that are worldly and those that are beyond worldly, those that are realized and those that are not realized, those that are conditioned and those that are unconditioned, those that are to be known and those that are to be completely known, those that are objects and the aggregates that lead to existence, those with maturation and those without maturation, those with causes and those without causes, those with results and those without results, the dharmas of dependent origination, the internal and the external, those included by name and form, those that are included and those that are not included, those caused by the great elements and those not caused by the great elements, those that exist and those that do not exist, those that are superior and those that are unsurpassed, those that are to be cultivated, the past, the future, and the present, those with desire, those with form, those with formlessness, and virtuous dharmas.

And the virtuous, the non-virtuous, the unspecified, the learners, the non-learners, the neither learners nor non-learners, those to be abandoned by seeing, those to be abandoned by meditation, those not to be abandoned, and the various distinctions of the dharmas that delight in seeing the profound are established. What I have taught as merely a collection of things is the Sutra Pitaka, because it briefly explains the meaning, it is called the Sutra Pitaka. Among the twelve parts included in the Holy Teachings, the remaining ten, excluding the section on topics and the section on definitive exposition, should generally be combined according to their respective circumstances. What are the four things? For example, the term 'thing' refers to the display of distinct understanding. So, what does a Bodhisattva fully seek in hearing? In short, they seek the Bodhisattva Pitaka, the Hearer Pitaka, the treatises of outsiders, worldly crafts, and the places of work. Among these, the Bodhisattva Pitaka refers to the extremely extensive category among the twelve parts included in the Holy Teachings. The Hearer Pitaka refers to all the remaining branches. The treatises of outsiders are of three types: treatises on medicine, treatises on logic, and treatises on grammar. Knowing worldly crafts and places of work are of twelve types: including deceptive crafts, trading crafts, crafts of serving kings, writing, arithmetic, speaking, recording, numbers, manual arithmetic, divination crafts, intellectual crafts, hammering crafts, reproductive crafts, mixing crafts, cooking crafts, and musical crafts. These contents that a Bodhisattva should seek, in short, are the five sciences: inner science, medical science, logic, grammar, and the science of crafts and works. If a Bodhisattva fully seeks hearing, and seeks these five sciences as objects of hearing, they will be able to distinctly understand various skillful matters.

That which transforms becomes a distinct understanding that is shown. The object of refuge is what shows commitment. That is, committing to taking refuge in the Three Jewels and Bodhisattvas, with five states: the karma of the body is completely purified, the karma of speech is completely purified, the karma of mind is completely purified, having great compassion for sentient beings, and possessing the unsurpassed state, therefore, after closely examining the object of refuge, one should take refuge. So, what should one take refuge in? For what reason does one take refuge in those objects? To what extent is it considered taking refuge? After taking refuge, how should one practice? What are the benefits of taking refuge? There are three things to take refuge in: the Buddha Jewel, the Dharma Jewel, and the Sangha Jewel. For four reasons, one takes refuge in those objects: the Buddha Jewel is of an extremely gentle nature, and in all aspects is skilled in taming those to be tamed, has great compassion, and is not pleased by all material offerings, but is pleased by the offerings of practice. The Dharma Jewel taught in that way, and the Sangha Jewel born from his teachings, are also worthy of refuge only in that way. For four reasons, it is considered taking refuge: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, making a commitment, and not speaking of other refuges. The true practice of taking refuge has four aspects: relying well on a noble person, listening to the noble Dharma, properly applying the mind, and practicing the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma. Furthermore, there are four types of true practice: not letting the senses run wild, properly taking the basis of the precepts, generating compassion for sentient beings, and diligently making offerings to the Three Jewels at all times. The benefits of taking refuge are four: obtaining great merit, obtaining great joy and supreme joy, obtaining samadhi, and obtaining complete purification. Furthermore, there are four benefits: possessing great protection, and diminishing and completely exhausting all the obscurations of wrong views.
