O! Therefore, in order to show that, (someone) asked the Blessed One: How many kinds of afflictive latent tendencies do those (Blessed Ones) have? The answer is: There are three kinds, namely: subduing companions, weak latent tendencies, and subtle latent tendencies. Among them, subduing companions refers to: from the first ground to the fifth ground and below, there are afflictive latent tendencies, because those grounds have co-emergent afflictions manifesting, so the companion of co-emergent afflictions—non-co-emergent afflictions—is subdued, because the companion of co-emergent afflictions manifesting—non-co-emergent afflictions—is subdued, so that latent tendency does not correspond to non-co-emergent afflictions manifesting, but corresponds to co-emergent afflictions manifesting and subduing companions, so it is called subduing companions. In reality, it is not said that the afflictions of subduing companions should manifest, but refers to the afflictive latent tendencies that correspond to it. Therefore, just like this, it is said "in the five grounds" etc. "In the five grounds" refers to: from the first ground to the fifth ground. "Co-emergent afflictions manifesting" refers to: on those five grounds, all the great and medium afflictions manifesting have already been eliminated. The small manifestations that have not been eliminated are not born from imputation, but are naturally co-emergent, so they are called co-emergent afflictions manifesting. "Companion" refers to: the companion of co-emergent manifestations. "Non-co-emergent afflictions manifesting" refers to: for example, below the stage of practice by faith, the companion of co-emergent afflictions manifesting refers to non-co-emergent, such as attachment and anger arising from sudden environmental causes. Because he does not have it at that time, it refers to: the companion of co-emergent afflictions manifesting—non-co-emergent afflictions manifesting, when the Bodhisattva first attains between the first and fifth grounds,

Because it does not exist. Therefore, it is called "subduing the true friend," which refers to the fact that from the first bhumi to the fifth bhumi, there is a latent affliction, which is the co-emergent manifestation of affliction. Because it possesses the subduing of the true friend, that latency is also called "subduing the true friend," meaning that from the first bhumi to the fifth bhumi, there exists such a latent affliction that has not been abandoned. The term "weak latency" refers to the fact that in the sixth and seventh bhumis, due to the power of cultivation, there is complete practice with application, and ultimately there is no such power as the latent afflictions below the fifth bhumi. However, the subtle manifestation of afflictions that obstruct the purity of the tolerance of non-arising dharmas is also suppressed by the method of cultivation, weakening and manifesting it, and the latent affliction corresponding to this. Therefore, it is said, "like this, in the sixth and seventh bhumis." The so-called "subtle manifestation itself" refers to the subtle manifestation of afflictions that obstruct the purity of the tolerance of non-arising dharmas. The so-called "manifestation itself suppressed by cultivation" means that the subtle manifestation is also suppressed by the power of cultivation, weakening and manifesting it. Because such a subtle manifestation exists, the latency that triggers that manifestation is called "weak latency," meaning that in the sixth and seventh bhumis, there exists such a latency that has not been abandoned. The term "subtle latency" refers to the fact that from the eighth bhumi and above to the tenth bhumi and below, the manifestation of afflictions that are entangled, subtle latency, only a subtle latency exists. Therefore, it is said, "like this, the eighth bhumi and, those above it, etc." The so-called "completely not manifesting all afflictions, and only abiding in the obscuration of knowledge" means that above that, there is no manifestation of afflictions that are entangled, but like the obscuration of knowledge existing in the heart essence, because it has not been abandoned, the subtle latency that is the basis for it exists, which is called the subtle latency of afflictions.
