The meaning of the words and so on will be explained, and the so-called "field of activity" refers to the common field of activity of all Tathagatas, which is called the complete purification of the Buddha-land. The so-called "field" refers to the non-common five aggregates of all Tathagatas. Therefore, in order to show these two, (someone) asked: "Bhagavan, what is the field of activity of the Tathagata? What is the field of the Tathagata? What is the difference between these two?" From this point on, it is to show the correct teaching as an antidote to the extreme ignorance of the field of activity and the field of the Tathagata. The field of activity of the Tathagata refers to the complete purification of the Buddha-land, which is common to all Tathagatas and decorated with inconceivable and immeasurable merits. The so-called "common" means that Bodhisattvas do not purify different Buddha-lands separately, but after attaining complete enlightenment, they reside in different Buddha-lands. Because the Buddha-lands are equal, it is said to be common, but it is not the only one. For example, the complete enjoyment bodies of each Buddha are different because they are the nature of the consciousness that enters the aggregates by transformation. The Dharmakaya is the transformation of the Alaya consciousness. The Nirmanakaya is the nature of what is completely imputed, so it is nothing. Due to the power of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, various different perceptions appear to sentient beings. The so-called "complete purification of the Buddha-land decorated with inconceivable and immeasurable merits" is like showing the perfection that existed before. Therefore, it is a field of activity because it abides through the four kinds of conduct. The display of the field of activity of the Tathagatas is also as stated in the Sutra of the Birth of the Noble Tathagata, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the auspicious one born from the lineage of the Tathagata, said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra: 'Hey, son of the Buddha, Bodhisattva Mahasattva, Tathagata...'

How does one comprehend the sphere of activity of the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones? After he had spoken thus, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva Samantabhadra spoke thus to the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, the glorious one born into the family of the Tathāgata: O son of the Victorious One, how should a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva comprehend that the sphere of activity of the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones is a sphere of activity without attachment? O son of the Victorious One, for example, suchness does not occur at the limit of the past, does not move to the limit of the future, and the present occurrence is not manifestly established. O son of the Victorious One, likewise, a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva should comprehend that the sphere of activity of the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones is unborn, unmoving, and not manifestly established. One should contemplate as it is said, and so forth. The realm of the Tathāgata is the five realms: the realm of sentient beings, the realm of the world, the realm of dharma, the realm of those to be tamed, and the realm of the means of taming, in all their aspects. The realm of the Tathāgata means that while residing in the pure Buddha-field, in which other five realms do they perform activities? The teaching of the realm of the Tathāgatas is also from the Sutra Teaching the Birth and Appearance of the Noble Tathāgata. After he had spoken thus, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, the glorious one born into the family of the Tathāgata, spoke thus to the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva Samantabhadra: O son of the Victorious One, how should a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva comprehend the realm of the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones? After he had spoken thus, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva Samantabhadra spoke thus to the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, the glorious one born into the family of the Tathāgata: O son of the Victorious One, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva goes with the entry of wisdom and knowledge that is without attachment and without entry.
