From the section on showing characteristics, whatever is in accordance with this is appropriately indicated by words such as "is." The principle of being certain that what is absent in the dissimilar side is an example of dissimilar dharma. This is also explicitly stated in other scriptures and treatises on valid cognition. Here, since the following is shown through similar examples, the opposite of dissimilar examples is naturally established, so the Bhagavan did not directly show it. If one wants to understand, one should say: Whatever is unconditioned is permanent, like the uncompounded. Thus, the characteristic of nature, which possesses three characteristics, also avoids the three faults of reasoning: unestablished, contradictory, and uncertain. Apply it appropriately as before. So, how should inferring the cause from the effect be connected with the characteristic of possessing three aspects? The characteristic of being present in the similar side is like saying, "Wherever there is billowing smoke, there is fire." What is meant by "to be inferred" is that wherever there is billowing smoke, there is fire. That is, in whatever place, wherever there is billowing smoke, the dharma to be established, fire, is manifestly present through the dharma of the establishing side, the effect-sign, smoke. Therefore, it is called "subject of dharma." Here, for the subject of dharma, the dharma to be established, such as things and impermanence, and the dharma of the establishing side, such as non-appearance and the sign of nature, do not exist. Therefore, in the subject of dharma, wherever there is billowing smoke, the dharma of the establishing side, the effect-sign, smoke, is manifestly present, from which it is inferred that the dharma to be established, fire, although not manifestly present, is indeed present. In this way, in whatever place, wherever there is billowing smoke, the dharma to be established, fire, is manifestly present through the dharma of the establishing side, the effect-sign, smoke, which is related by the characteristic of arising from the thing to be established and the thing that establishes, therefore it is called the "reason of effect." The characteristic of being present on the similar side...

The reasoning is as follows: An example of similarity is: wherever there is smoke, there is fire, such as in a kitchen. This is when showing the characteristic of closely associating an example of one's own kind, indicating with phrases like "whatever is similar to that is..." as appropriate. The way to determine that something is definitely absent in a dissimilar category is an example of dissimilarity. This is also explicitly shown in scriptures and other valid means of cognition. Here, since the example of similarity shows concomitance, the negation of the example of dissimilarity is accomplished incidentally, so the Bhagavan did not explicitly show it. If one wants to know, one should say: wherever there is no smoke, there is no fire, such as in a large pond. Thus, the sign of the effect that possesses the three modes has also abandoned the three faults of reasoning: unestablished, contradictory, and uncertain. Apply it as appropriate, as before. Thus, in the subject to be inferred, the property of the proponent's side, either non-apprehension, or nature, or the meaning of knowing each of the signs of the effect, the object of direct perception, the meaning of direct perception, abiding encompassed by its own characteristic, the characteristic of direct perception, being free from conceptualization and non-erroneous, through the door of what is directly perceived, the dharma to be established, non-entity or impermanence, etc., or the meaning of explaining the cause, the object of inference, the hidden meaning, encompassed by the general characteristic, not deceived by place, time, and nature, this is the characteristic of inference, inferring by the sign of the three modes, whatever one understands oneself and makes others understand, that is the characteristic of directly perceiving what abides in it, it should be applied in this way. The meaning of the words is as explained above. After that, in order to fully and purely show inference by the characteristic of closely associating an example of one's own kind, in the internal and external conditioned phenomena, the death and birth that are renowned in all the world, not attending to them, closely associating, and attending to the suffering of birth, etc., closely associating, and attending to the lack of independence, closely associating, and also in external objects, also the world
