It should be known that all kinds are included. "Arising" means the first arising of what has not yet arisen. "Subsequent designation" means applying names and terms to things with their own nature or distinguishing characteristics. These also depend on similarities, and there are dissimilarities, and they become two. The detailed distinctions regarding their characteristics should be viewed as they appear from the authoritative teachings of the Lord of the Powerful, the glorious deity Lha Tsen Jangchub, accomplished through miraculous power. "What are the causes, and what are the conditions?" means that when arising actions and subsequently designating the results, one must rely on those causes and conditions, hence it is called the reason of dependence. This indicates that. So, what are the causes and conditions for the arising of actions and subsequent designation? And what are the results that arise and are subsequently designated in dependence on those causes and conditions? There are ten causes, four conditions, and five results. So, what are these ten causes? They are the cause of subsequent designation, the cause of dependence, the cause of projection, the cause of manifest accomplishment, the cause of complete holding, the cause of leading, the cause of individual determination, the cause of co-emergence, the cause of dissimilarity, and the cause of non-dissimilarity. Among these, except for the cause of subsequent designation, the remaining nine causes are the causes of arising. Among these, the cause of dissimilarity, when it becomes non-dissimilar, should also be considered a cause of arising. Only the cause of subsequent designation should be considered the cause of subsequent designation. So, what is the cause of subsequent designation? It is the names of all phenomena, and the concepts that precede names, and the speech that precedes concepts, these are the causes of subsequent designation for those phenomena. What is the cause of dependence? It is whatever basis one relies on, and by whatever cause one desires and accepts something, that is its cause of dependence. What is the cause of projection? It is that the seed is the cause of projection for its own fruit until the end. What is the cause of manifest ac

What is the cause of accomplishment? The seed itself is the cause of the manifestation and accomplishment of its own fruit. What is the cause of complete holding? Factors other than the seed are the cause of complete holding. What is the cause of leading? The fruit produced from the seed is the cause of leading to the future fruit cast by the seed. What is the cause of individual determination? The individual causes of various different kinds of dharmas are the cause of individual determination. What is the cause of acting together? The cause of dependence, the cause of casting, the cause of manifestation and accomplishment, the cause of complete holding, the cause of leading, and the cause of individual determination, all these combined together are the cause of acting together. What is the cause of the unfavorable? The cause that obstructs arising and so on is the cause of the unfavorable. What is the cause of the non-unfavorable? The cause that does not obstruct arising and so on is the cause of the non-unfavorable. These ten causes, whether internal or external conditioned phenomena, worldly crops and so on, all unclassified objects, as well as afflictions and karma, and the nature of arising, all objects on the side of pervasive affliction, and dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment and so on, all objects on the side of purification, are the cause of arising without error and subsequently applying names. How do these ten causes cause all unclassified objects such as worldly crops to arise and subsequently apply names? For example, whatever crops belong to the category of grains in the world, whatever they produce in this world, for their names, there are various concepts and words, such as being called barley, rice, salu, wheat, sesame, and beans, etc., these are the cause of applying their names, applying the names of barley and so on, take it, hold it, damage it, etc. Depending on hunger, thirst, weakness, and maintaining the body, and tasting food, depending on barley and so on, desire arises, gather, obtain, and enjoy.

The practice of these is the dependent cause of those. Whatever seed, such as barley, produces whatever crop, that seed is its projective cause. That seed is the manifest accomplishment cause of that sprout. The sprout arises from conditions such as earth and rain, that is its complete holding cause. The continuous succession of sprouts, stalks, and leaves, one after another, is the guiding cause for the accomplishment and complete ripening of that crop. From the seed of barley also arises the sprout of barley and the crop of barley, and not others, and from other grains also it is the same, that is their respective definite cause. From the dependent cause up to the respective definite cause, all six of those causes combined together are the co-operative cause for the accomplishment of that crop. Hail and the occurrence of harm to the crop, etc., are its opposing cause. The absence of those, that is, the absence of obstruction, is the non-opposing cause. Thus, just as these ten causes apply to the collection of grains, so also should they be applied appropriately to other worldly objects not explicitly mentioned. How do all the phenomena of the completely afflicted side, characterized by afflictions, actions, and births, arise from these ten causes, and how are they subsequently designated? Thus, all the names, concepts, and expressions of dependent origination are as follows: Ignorance, formations, consciousness, name and form, increasing from that to old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and agitation. For the time being, the designation of complete affliction, from the condition of ignorance, formations, etc., from the condition of birth, old age and death, etc., is the cause for the subsequent designation. Pleasure, etc., caused by reliance on the experience of objects, these limbs of existence enter, which is the dependent cause of that complete affliction. In this life, birth, old age, and death arise.
