The explanation of the secret is like this: mostly it is the explanation of the Vinaya Pitaka of the Hearers. The explanation of the distinctions is like this: mostly it is the explanation of the Mahayana Pitaka. The explanation of the answered matter is the explanation of the four Dharma Sutras, that is, from "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent" to "Nirvana is peace," and the explanation of things similar to that. The explanation of the unanswered matter is that if asked, "Is the world eternal?" one says, "I have not answered," and does not answer. Similarly, if asked, "Does the Tathagata exist after death?" up to "neither exists nor does not exist," these fourteen unanswered questions, one says, "I have not answered," and does not answer. Among them, the explanation of the unanswered matter can be understood through four reasons: because of non-existence, there is also non-answering, for example, asking, "Am I other than the aggregates or not other? Am I permanent or impermanent?" and so on. Because of not conforming to the meaning, there is also non-answering, for example, in the Sutra of the Simile of the Leaves of the Shisha Tree, it says, "Although I have realized so much, I have not taught it. Why? Because those dharmas do not conform to the meaning." Because of defilements, there is also non-answering, for example, if asked, "Is there a self?" one becomes attached to the aggregates as the self; if one holds that there is a self other than the aggregates, that is not permissible, so one does not answer. If asked, "Is there no self?" one slanders the designation of a person, and if one clings to it, that is not permissible, so one does not answer. Similarly, if asked, "Does the Tathagata exist after death?" up to "neither exists nor does not exist," it is like not answering because of profundity. In the establishment of the nature of Suchness, there is also non-answering, for example, if asked, "Are these dharmas other or not other?" one does not answer, because the nature is neither other nor not other. Furthermore, the reason for explaining the unanswered matter is

It should be understood in four ways: because it is spoken by non-Buddhists, because it is not in accordance with reason, because it does not conform to meaning, and because it is merely the source of contention. What is the complete abandonment of two extremes? Here, in brief, it should be viewed from six aspects: completely abandoning the extreme of falsely imputing to non-existent things, completely abandoning the extreme of denigrating existent things, completely abandoning the extreme of clinging to permanence, completely abandoning the extreme of clinging to annihilation, completely abandoning the extreme of associating with the merit of desire, and completely abandoning the extreme of exhausting oneself. What is inconceivable? In brief, there are six inconceivable things: thinking about the self, thinking about sentient beings, thinking about the world, thinking about the ripening of the karma of sentient beings, the object of meditation of meditators, and the realm of the Buddhas. Among these, thinking about the self, thinking about sentient beings, and thinking about the world are inconceivable if they rely on views. Among these, thinking about the self is like this: here, some people rely on the view of the aggregates of decay and think in their minds, for example, "Did I exist in the past?" and so on. The ascertainment of sentient beings is like this: here, some people rely on the view of the aggregates of decay and think in their minds: "From where do sentient beings come? Who is the creator of sentient beings? Where do sentient beings go? Where will sentient beings cease?" and so on. Thinking about the world is like this: here, some people rely on the view of the aggregates of decay and think in their minds: "The world is permanent," and so on. Furthermore, they also start from the nature of phenomena and think in their minds: "From where did this nature of myself, the nature of sentient beings, and the nature of the world come from?" They cannot understand it merely through the reasoning of the nature of phenomena. Therefore, this is also called thinking about the inconceivable place. Thinking about the ripening of the karma of sentient beings is inconceivable in four aspects: place, thing, cause, and ripening.
