Although it is so, all the objects of oneself and others are the aspects and objects of consciousness arising from proximity, but they are not the general characteristics of the objects of oneself and others. All the objects of the aspects of consciousness of seekers and faults, as well as the objects of oneself and others, although it is so, all the motivations of oneself and others are not the objects of those two, but the nature of the objects of oneself and others. Similarly, the object of all the five sense consciousnesses is one's own nature, but all of one's own nature is not the object of the five sense consciousnesses, but the own nature of the realm of phenomena. Thus, when showing the various distinctions of the activities of the consciousnesses, the basis of the seed, the alaya consciousness, and the immediately preceding place, the uninterrupted cessation of the consciousnesses, is the common place of all the active consciousnesses. That immediately preceding place, when distinguishing and establishing the alaya consciousness, is: "The six are uninterruptedly ceased, whichever consciousness is that." Thus it is said, so the six groups of active consciousnesses are established temporarily. When establishing the alaya consciousness, when revealing the place of the arising order, it is said: "The consciousnesses are uninterruptedly ceased." Thus it is said, so it is established in terms of the eight consciousnesses. That place is not definite, for this, temporarily, when beings have mind, the alaya and the afflicted mind, and the mind consciousness are constantly continuous, so one's own previous moment of uninterrupted cessation is the immediately preceding place where one's own subsequent moment arises. The five sense consciousnesses are also, when all arise simultaneously, each one's uninterrupted cessation is each one's immediately preceding place. When all five cease simultaneously, and then four do not arise, if any one arises, then the uninterrupted cessation of all five is the immediately preceding place of any one that arises. If four do not arise, and any one arises, that uninterrupted cessation, even if all five arise simultaneously, the uninterrupted cessation of one is the immediately preceding place of all five arising. When sleeping and fainting, when there is no mind, it is the five gates

When the respective consciousnesses temporarily cease, their subsequent arising from cessation originates from the immediately preceding state of the uninterrupted Ālaya, the afflicted, and the consciousness of mind. Similarly, in the state of mindlessness during the attainment of the cessation of perception and in the realm of the non-perceptual beings, the six entering consciousnesses temporarily cease. Their subsequent arising from cessation originates from the immediately preceding state of the uninterrupted Ālaya and the afflicted. Likewise, in the state of mindlessness during the attainment of cessation, the seven, including the afflicted mind, temporarily cease. Their subsequent arising from cessation originates from the immediately preceding state of the uninterrupted Ālaya consciousness. In the state of mindlessness during the Parinirvana without remainder, since the Ālaya is abandoned, there is no immediately preceding state for all consciousnesses. Know that the nature of the transformed state is without cessation. Then, does whoever possesses the Ālaya consciousness also possess the entering consciousness? And does whoever possesses the entering consciousness also possess the Ālaya consciousness? The answer is: there are four possibilities. One who possesses the Ālaya consciousness but does not possess the entering consciousness is the mindless state of sleep, the mindless state of fainting, the attainment of the cessation of perception, one who has entered into the attainment of cessation, and those born among the non-perceptual beings; these should be applied accordingly. One who possesses the entering consciousness but does not possess the Ālaya consciousness is an Arhat, a Pratyekabuddha, a non-regressing Bodhisattva, and a Tathagata in a state of mind. One who possesses both is anyone other than those mentioned above in a state of mind. One who possesses neither is an Arhat, a Pratyekabuddha, a non-regressing Bodhisattva, and a Tathagata who has entered into the attainment of cessation, and one who is in the realm of Parinirvana without remainder. In this section explaining the manner in which consciousnesses arise together, some Śrāvakayāna schools believe that two minds of different types can also...
