These dharmas, such as those, are not the same as things and do not possess them. Those such as virtue, apart from the position of the seed and the immediately preceding position, are not the same in terms of the place of co-arising, the object, the aspect, the substance, and the time. Therefore, in other treatises as well, it is said that the aspect of consciousness is effortless and distracted, and that desires and so on do not enter into the object that is unmixed, because that consciousness arises from what is near, and should be said to be so. It is like what is said. In this way, due to the power of the virtue and non-virtue of the consciousness determined by projection, the consciousness and the five sense consciousnesses that arise from what is near, which arise in the next moment after it, are completely aroused by the cause, and by its moment, they arise continuously in the stream of virtue or non-virtue, and that is said to be the consciousness entering and following the virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas. The five sense consciousnesses that arise from what is near, even though they themselves are without discrimination, because the object they perceive corresponds to a pleasant or unpleasant place, whichever becomes close, relies on merely distinguishing the meaning of that own characteristic. After that, the consciousness of the seeker makes the general characteristic of the past object clear, and when it is distinguished by the determining consciousness, if the consciousness that previously arose from what is near distinguishes the general characteristic of the own characteristic that corresponds to the pleasant place, then the determining consciousness will become virtuous, and the opposite will become afflicted. This means that the five sense consciousnesses follow the virtue and affliction of the consciousness. Therefore, consciousness enters by the power of both itself and others, and the five sense consciousnesses only by the power of others. Previously, when describing those functions, the consciousness is what enters and follows the paths.

Furthermore, the aggregates of other consciousnesses also fully grasp the agreeable and disagreeable fruits, because they arise from their causes and universally generate similar causes. The five sense consciousnesses also follow and induce the mind consciousness, and it is shown that they fully grasp the agreeable and disagreeable fruits. These principles of virtue and affliction should also be combined as they are. These are generally the teachings on how consciousness arises. Here, the sutra says that conceptual mind consciousness also arises, which should be understood as the mind consciousness arising from proximity (Sanskrit: upaśraya). Here, the distinctions of how consciousness enters are shown. In short, the simultaneously arising eye sense and object of form, as well as the eye consciousness arising from them, and the mind consciousness arising from proximity that arises simultaneously with it, all arise simultaneously in a single moment without any before or after. Why is that? The eye sense is the place where eye consciousness arises simultaneously, and form is the self-characteristic of the form from which eye consciousness arises. The mind consciousness arising from proximity that arises simultaneously with it enters simultaneously with the eye consciousness, has the same object, and the sutra says that there is also conceptual mind consciousness. Therefore, these are not at different times. Some people think that the Blessed One said that eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and forms. The word 'dependent' (བརྟེན་ནས་) means that in the first moment the eye and form meet, and dependent on this, eye consciousness arises in the second moment, and in the third moment the mind consciousness led by it arises, so these are at different times. But that is not the case. The word 'dependent' (བརྟེན་ནས་) means dependent origination, dependent on the cause, and only shows the way the result arises, not that there is a before and after in time. For example, a spear

It is like a house. How does it manifest? The Blessed One taught that the meaning of dependent origination has twelve aspects, namely, 'This being, that arises; this arising, that originates.' 'This being, that arises' refers to the dependent origination of mind and mental factors, faculties, objects, and consciousness, etc., arising simultaneously. It is spoken in terms of cause and effect being simultaneous. Therefore, here, 'relying on the eye and form,' the eye and form are the cause, and consciousness is the effect. Therefore, it is said that the effect arises relying on the cause, which explains the relationship of cause and effect. But in reality, they are simultaneous. For example, the eye is the place where eye consciousness arises simultaneously, and form is the nature of the form from which eye consciousness arises. Therefore, they have no before or after, just as mind and mental factors, although being cause and effect, are simultaneous. 'This arising, that originates' refers to the dependent origination of seed and sprout, etc., arising in sequence, where the cause is earlier and the effect is later. Therefore, it is permissible for them to have a before and after. But there is no before or after between the eye, form, and eye consciousness; they should be understood as being simultaneous. If it is said that eye consciousness leads to the arising of eye consciousness in the third moment, that should not be understood as the mind consciousness arising from what is nearby. Because this very sutra also says, 'Along with that eye consciousness, there also arises the mind consciousness that follows simultaneously, has the same object of action, and is discriminating.' Therefore, it should not be said that the time and object are different. Other treatises also say that mind consciousness engages with the objects of self and others, so it is certain that it also engages with the object of the eye. Therefore, eye consciousness is a momentary discrimination, so its object is also a momentary proximity.
