Regarding its own characteristics, when the five consciousnesses arise simultaneously with their companions, as companions, they arise together and correspondingly possess, being only the five pervasive mental factors. If other mental factors such as desire do not arise, then the five consciousnesses are also good, non-virtuous, and neutral phenomena arising from the mind, arising one by one with multiple aspects of a single object and arising together and correspondingly possessing. If it is said that the five consciousnesses are immediately cut off after arising in that instant and do not remain in the later time, how is this possible? This is because previously, when explaining these actions, it was said that consciousness enters and follows good and non-virtuous phenomena. Also, the five consciousnesses follow the goodness and afflictions of consciousness. Therefore, it should be understood. How is that? Previously, in the third instant, when a determined mind arises, as a companion, corresponding to the five pervasive mental factors, and from the good, afflictions, and neutral, the things that arise one by one with multiple aspects of a single object, whether it is good, an affliction, or neutral, when the object of any one of them becomes a nearby existence and is determined, in that instant, that determination of consciousness, as long as it does not turn to another, is the same as the object, the many mental factors of good, affliction, or neutral, in the same place, object, form, substance, and time, therefore correspondingly possessing and arising. At that time, that determined consciousness itself, due to the power of any correspondingly possessed mental factor, either becomes good, or becomes an affliction, or becomes neutral. And, the determined mind, whether it is good, an affliction, or neutral, is due to the power of correspondingly possessing the five pervasive mental factors such as attention, and the mental factors of many grounds, whether good, affliction, or neutral, after that

The five sense consciousnesses arising from the subsequent moment of abiding project. Having projected, the five sense consciousnesses arising from the subsequent moment of abiding, as previously explained, with their own objects, faculties, and the mind consciousness arising simultaneously with them from abiding near, that which arises simultaneously, that itself projects and universally instigates the definitive mind consciousness. If it is universally instigated by being associated with virtue, it is called associated with virtue. If it is universally instigated by being associated with afflictions, it is called associated with afflictions. If it is universally instigated by being associated with the indeterminate, it is called associated with the indeterminate. Thus, the five sense consciousnesses themselves do not possess the actual substance of virtuous and non-virtuous minds arising from the Dharma, but rather, due to the power of whatever virtuous, afflicted, or indeterminate state the projecting and definitive mind consciousness is associated with, they arise in the continuum of virtue, affliction, or indeterminacy. Therefore, it is said that they operate solely under the influence of others. The statement that the five sense consciousnesses also arise together with them and are concordant means that the projecting and definitive mind consciousness is concordant with those Dharmas, and because it generates the five sense consciousnesses, it is merely a designation based on the effect attributed to the cause, through an indirect means, and it is not actually co-arising and concordant. Therefore, at the moment when the five sense consciousnesses arise from abiding near, there is nothing else present except for the five pervasive mental factors. Therefore, it should be understood that the scriptures also state that the nature of the five sense consciousnesses is indeterminate. The mind consciousness that arises together with the five sense consciousnesses from abiding near is also generated and projected by the definitive mind consciousness that it itself projects, being concordant with whatever virtuous state, etc., and it arises in the continuum of virtue, non-virtue, or indeterminacy, being of the same cause as that, but regarding virtue,
