When one seeks to fully manifest the general characteristics of that past object, then one focuses solely on the general characteristics of one's own object. When the mind consciousness arising from the previously abiding one, according to how one's own and others' object-conditions are, simultaneously abides, and discerns the respective self-characteristics of those two objects, and seeks to fully manifest what the general characteristics of those two past objects are, then it is called focusing only on the general characteristics of both oneself and others at the same time. That which is called ascertainment is that which arises only in the third moment immediately following the arising of the seeking mind consciousness in the second moment, and the previously seeking mind consciousness, whether it be the general characteristic of one's own object or the general characteristic of the objects of both oneself and others, that which distinguishes the object by the mind consciousness with mindfulness associated with concepts such as "that is blue, that is yellow," etc., of the past object that has manifested the general characteristic, that is distinguishing the meaning and also focusing on the name of that meaning. The distinction between that which focuses solely on the general characteristic of one's own object and that which focuses only on the general characteristic of the objects of both oneself and others at the same time should also be applied appropriately as before. Thus, in all situations, the mind consciousness arising from abiding nearby and the five sense consciousnesses focus on the self-characteristic, while the seeking and ascertaining mind consciousnesses both focus on the general characteristic, it should be understood. Thus, those three minds, except for the six mindless states, namely the mindless state of sleep, the mindless state of fainting, the absorption of non-discrimination, non-discrimination, the absorption of cessation, and the realm of nirvana without remainder, are the six states that are the opposite of those.

Therefore, it should be understood that in all situations when the mind consciousness arises in relation to its own and others' objects, the sequence occurs in this way. Among these, the previously mentioned path of mind consciousness is that which discerns the objects of its own and others' realms, discerns its own and common characteristics, discerns the three times, and discerns the continuum of moments. The mind consciousness's own object is the seven realms of dharma. The other object is the five objects of the five sense consciousnesses, such as form. Both of these are encompassed by their own and common characteristics, the three times, and all the streams of moments. Among these, the own characteristic is that which is encompassed by the present time and a single moment. The common characteristic is that which is encompassed by the past and future times, and the stream of moments before and after. The own characteristic of the mind consciousness's own and others' objects, that which is encompassed by the present time and a single moment, those that are not contrary to the object and nature, are the objects of the mind consciousness arising from close abiding and the five sense consciousnesses. Their common characteristic, that which is encompassed by the past and future times, and the stream of moments before and after, those that are contrary to the object and nature, are the objects of the mind consciousness of seeking and determination. So, why does the mind consciousness arising from close abiding engage with the own characteristic? Because the own characteristic is the object of direct perception, and the mind arising from close abiding that focuses on it is also without conceptualization and without error. Why do the seeker and the determiner both engage with the common characteristic? Because the common characteristic is the object of inference, and the mind of the seeker and the determiner that focus on it are both conceptual and capable of inference. Previously, in the five sense consciousnesses, it was said that they discern their own object, discern the present time, and discern a single moment. All of this is only encompassed by its own characteristic, therefore it is the object of direct perception, the five senses'
