Also known as the ālaya-vijñāna, also known as the mind, thus were proclaimed three names. To counteract the inability to distinguish the specific characteristics of the ālaya-vijñāna among these three, it is to be skilled in distinguishing the specific characteristics of these three. Therefore, the wise, this consciousness is also called the grasping consciousness, also called the ālaya-vijñāna, and also called the mind. Previously, when explaining the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna, the four phrases that were mentioned—having all seeds, becoming an object of location, abiding as an object of location, and grasping—are also shown by this occasion. The meaning of these will be explained below when explaining the antidote to extreme ignorance of the distinctions of karma. After that, the meaning of the words that explain the antidote to extreme ignorance of the distinctions of karma, and so on, will be explained. To counteract the ignorance of the reasoning for the characteristics previously explained, because one performs such and such actions, it is called the grasping consciousness, the ālaya-vijñāna, and the mind. This is the distinction of karma that was shown by the ālaya-vijñāna as the previous reasoning. Now, for the time being, why is it called the grasping consciousness? Therefore, it is said, "Because it grasps and takes this body." Among these, "grasping" means that this consciousness closely takes the aggregates of form, feeling, perception, and mental formations, relying on each other like a quiver, and abiding as an object of location. "Taking" means that if it is grasped by this, then this body of form is claimed as one's own, becoming counted as a sentient being. These two show in order the words previously mentioned, "abiding as an object of location and grasping." Therefore, it should be added, "it is called the grasping consciousness." Why is it called the ālaya-vijñāna? Therefore, it is said, "Because it completely and extremely joins this body with the meaning of being one with accomplishment and happiness."
