These teachings are given to guide those with childlike wisdom, so that they may enter through superior methods. Thus, the nature of these mind, intellect, and consciousness, as well as their locations, objects, companions, functions, and the very existence of the Alaya consciousness, and their various distinctions, are not understood by outsiders and even some insiders. Therefore, these are naturally hidden from them, and are called secrets. The term "wise" refers to one who understands the principles of Dharma, and who is skilled in the secrets of its realm of activity through discriminating wisdom. The repetition of "skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness" is to show the meaning of its fame. The term "as it is said" is synonymous with how it is declared in those Sutra Pitakas. The question, "In what way does a Bodhisattva become skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness?" refers to asking in what way understanding the principles of Dharma leads to being skilled. "Understanding the principles of Dharma" refers to the discriminating wisdom that understands the very nature of the abiding of dependent arising. Through this understanding, one can understand the secrets of the realm of activity of the Dharma principles that the wise understand, namely the nature of mind, intellect, and consciousness, their locations, objects, companions, functions, and the existence of the Alaya consciousness, as well as being skilled in establishing the way of entry. Only then can one become wise. The question, "If the Tathagata and Bodhisattva are called skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness, in what way are they called so?" refers to asking in what way non-discriminating wisdom leads to being called wise. "Non-discriminating wisdom" refers to pure wisdom gathered by transformation, which is transcendent. Through this understanding, one can be called wise, namely by understanding the secrets of the realm of activity of non-discriminating wisdom, and by being skilled in establishing the cessation of the Alaya consciousness. Only then can one be called wise. In summary, the meaning of the words of inquiry, etc., has been explained. After that, the meaning of the words of extensive explanation, etc., will be explained, and that is how it is.

Having inquired, the Blessed One extensively expounded on the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness. Therefore, he spoke of "Wise one, it is like that," and so on. Among these, this extensive exposition is an extensive exposition as an antidote to the three extreme obscurations regarding the secret of mind. The three extreme obscurations are: extreme obscuration regarding intrinsic nature, extreme obscuration regarding detailed distinctions, and extreme obscuration regarding answers to refutations. Among these, the exposition that is the antidote to extreme obscuration regarding intrinsic nature is what is expounded from "Wise one, in this cycle of the six realms" to "The formless realm does not have two kinds of taking." The exposition that is the antidote to extreme obscuration regarding detailed distinctions is what is expounded from "Wise one, that consciousness is also called the consciousness of taking" to "It is designated as such." The exposition that is the antidote to extreme obscuration regarding answers to refutations is what is expounded with one verse from "Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time," and so on. Among these, first, the meaning of the words of the antidote to extreme obscuration regarding intrinsic nature, and so on, should be explained. Intrinsic nature is what is mind, intellect, and consciousness. Extreme obscuration is not knowing their characteristics. As its antidote, the establishment of the manifestation of the alaya-consciousness connecting to rebirth in the place of birth in the internal taking in two ways and entering into cyclic existence is called the antidote to extreme obscuration regarding intrinsic nature. Therefore, he spoke of "Wise one, in this cycle of the six realms," and so on. Among these, "the body manifestly formed" is explained by "will become." First, it is connected with the stage of the aggregates connecting to rebirth in the place of birth. "The two kinds of taking" refers to the two causes of the alaya-consciousness entering into cyclic existence and connecting to rebirth, namely, the two kinds of internal taking, which are connected with the taking of the sense faculties with support, which are form, and the taking of the habitual tendencies of manifest attachment to the nature of imputation.
